Tara Hollander
I’ve been thinking about salt that can illuminate a house
I’ve been thinking about how the greatest scientists
Haven’t gotten a hold of its simplest properties,
How the closest they’ve got is natural manipulation:
Conductor of ions between sea and river water.
Mostly, salt sits as untapped power of individual crystals.
I picture us sprinkled and sinking, shaken from sky.
I’ve been floating, thinking on things, with a blank face
And faraway eyes, like useless salt of the earth;
A conductor of ions without a membrane to cross.
Without a way to generate in these conditions.
I want to know if the future includes me,
I want to know if the light in the house is on.
