My name is Félix M. Pabón-Rodríguez. I am an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics and Health Data Science at Indiana University School of Medicine and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
My methodological research focuses on the development and implementation of Bayesian statistical methodologies and other advanced analytical techniques such as longitudinal, survival, and joint models. My applied interdisciplinary research interests are centered around infectious diseases, health equity, mental health, and maternal/infant health.
My research sits at the intersection of infectious disease modeling, health disparities, and global health. I develop Bayesian statistical models and joint modeling approaches to study transmission dynamics and diagnostic and surveillance patterns of diseases such as visceral leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, malaria, and HIV. Much of this work integrates molecular, serologic, behavioral, and clinical data to better understand co-infections, immune responses, and the consequences of misclassification and/or misreporting. A second core area of my work focuses on health disparities. I examine how social and structural determinants influence disparities in outcomes ranging from childhood vaccination coverage to maternal morbidity and mortality, mental health among Hispanic and Latino adults, and access to care in resource-limited settings. My current projects in the United States and Kenya bring together clinical, ecological, social, and climatic data to characterize malaria risk, understand non-malarial febrile illnesses, and identify drivers of persistent gaps in maternal and child health. As a biostatistician, I work across disciplines and settings, collaborating with global health partners through IeDEA, AMPATH, IU Center for Global Health, and Centre for Community Health and Wellbeing (JOOUST-Kenya) while leading an interdisciplinary research group of students and faculty/staff colleagues focused on infectious disease and health equity. My goal is to ensure that rigorous statistical methods support actionable, culturally informed, and sustainable public health interventions.
In addition to my research activities, I am actively engaged in service to the university and broader community through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This includes supporting programs that promote Biostatistics and Health Data Science among underrepresented and minority populations through outreach, recruitment, and training programs.
