If you want a gasket engineered to seal imperfect surfaces on heavy-duty Ford trucks, choose Fel-Pro VS 50687; if you need motor oil that maintains viscosity and protects against sludge during stop-and-go work commutes, choose Quaker State Motor Oil.
These two products serve completely different functions within the engine bay, yet both are critical for keeping a work truck running smoothly. One is a physical barrier designed to withstand heat and pressure, while the other is a fluid lubricant designed to flow through tight passages and reduce friction. Confusing them would be a costly mistake, so it is vital to understand exactly what each does before making your next purchase for your fleet or personal vehicle.
• Fel-Pro VS 50687: Its biggest strength is the proprietary cork-rubber formulation designed specifically to conform to imperfect sealing surfaces, ensuring a leak-free repair even when metal flanges are not perfectly flat. The trade-off is that it is a single-use, specific-fit component rather than a consumable fluid, meaning you must verify exact vehicle compatibility before buying. This pick is for mechanics and DIYers replacing worn valve cover gaskets on 2007–2014 Ford trucks and SUVs who need an OE-grade replacement that seals immediately.
• Quaker State Motor Oil: Its biggest strength is its ability to maintain consistent viscosity from start to finish while actively combating engine sludge and deposits in mixed driving conditions. The trade-off is that it is a generic 5-quart container of 10W-30 oil that requires proper disposal and regular changing intervals, rather than a one-time install part. This pick is for drivers who face daily highway-to-city transitions and need reliable wear protection without premium pricing.
The Fel-Pro VS 50687 is not just a piece of rubber; it is a precision-engineered solution for a very specific mechanical problem. Designed with a proprietary cork-rubber formulation, this gasket set addresses the reality of real-world repairs where engine surfaces are rarely perfect. In the shop, I have seen too many leaks occur because a standard gasket could not fill the microscopic gaps caused by warping or previous installation errors. This product is built specifically for that repair environment. It is highly conformable, allowing it to adapt to uneven surfaces and create a superior seal that prevents oil from escaping onto hot engine components.
This part is explicitly intended for owners of 2007 through 2010 Ford Explorer Sport Tracs, 2007 through 2014 Ford Expeditions, and the 2007 through 2010 F-150 models, along with the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 variants. If you own one of these vehicles and notice oil dripping from the top of the engine block, this is likely the component you need. The package includes every part required for the repair, which eliminates the frustration of missing bolts or seals during the installation process. Because it has been real-world tested on-vehicle, it is validated to perform under the heat and vibration typical of these trucks.

You should buy this if you are performing a valve cover gasket replacement and need a part that guarantees a seal even if your engine surface has minor imperfections. However, you should skip this item if your vehicle is not listed in the compatibility chart, as the fitment is precise. It is also not a long-term fluid maintenance item; once installed, it stays there until the next major service. It is a one-time fix for a specific failure point, designed to last through multiple years of operation provided the installation is done correctly.
Quaker State Motor Oil serves a different but equally vital role in keeping a work truck alive. This 10W-30 blend is formulated to provide durable wear protection, which is essential for engines that see constant motion. Unlike a gasket that sits still, this oil must constantly circulate, protecting moving parts from metal-on-metal contact. The formula is designed to help engines survive the harsh cycle of high-speed highway operation followed immediately by repetitive, stop-and-go city driving. This is the exact scenario a work truck faces daily, shuttling between job sites and back to the garage.
A key feature of this oil is its ability to combat engine sludge and deposits over time. As engines run, contaminants build up, and acids form that can eat away at internal components. This motor oil provides corrosion protection against those harmful acids generated by engine contaminants, extending the life of the engine internals. Furthermore, it maintains its viscosity from start to finish. Whether the engine is cold at dawn or hot after hours of idling, the oil film remains thick enough to protect the bearings and camshafts. The amber color indicates the base fluid quality, and the 5-quart size is standard for most full oil changes on larger V6 and V8 engines found in these trucks.
You should choose this oil if you drive a mix of highway and city routes and want to ensure your engine stays clean and protected against acid buildup. It is ideal for the "daily driver" work truck that never gets a break from the road. You might skip this if your manufacturer specifies a different viscosity grade like 5W-20 or 5W-30, as using the wrong weight can affect fuel economy and engine performance. It is a consumable item that needs to be replaced regularly, but it is the backbone of routine maintenance. Without this level of protection, the engine components inside your truck would degrade much faster under the stress of daily labor.
• Best for sealing imperfect engine surfaces → Fel-Pro VS 50687, because its cork-rubber formulation is engineered to fill gaps that standard gaskets miss.
• Best for mixed highway and stop-and-go driving → Quaker State Motor Oil, as it is specifically tested to handle the thermal stress of varying speeds.
• Best for preventing acid corrosion → Quaker State Motor Oil, since it actively neutralizes harmful acids generated by engine contaminants.
• Best for a complete repair kit → Fel-Pro VS 50687, as it includes every part needed for the valve cover gasket replacement unless otherwise noted.
• Best for maintaining consistent oil film thickness → Quaker State Motor Oil, ensuring protection from the moment the key turns until the engine cools down.
• Best for 2007–2014 Ford Truck owners → Fel-Pro VS 50687, given its specific compatibility with the F-150, Expedition, and Super Duty lines.
• Best for general wear reduction → Quaker State Motor Oil, providing durable protection against friction in all moving engine parts.
• Best for long-term engine cleanliness → Quaker State Motor Oil, due to its sludge-combating properties that keep internal passages clear.
I would recommend the Fel-Pro VS 50687 if you are facing a specific leak issue on a compatible Ford work truck, because nothing beats a gasket designed to seal imperfect surfaces. However, for the ongoing health of any work truck, I would choose the Quaker State Motor Oil as my primary maintenance choice, given its proven ability to handle the brutal stop-and-go cycles of daily use. Both are essential, but they solve different problems. If I had to pick one to save my truck today, I'd grab the gasket to stop the immediate mess, but I'd know I need the oil to keep the engine running tomorrow.
Using a gasket that does not match the specific model year or engine type can lead to poor sealing, resulting in oil leaks that damage other components and create fire hazards. Always verify the "Amazon Confirmed Fit" bar for your specific vehicle information before purchasing.
No, while Quaker State 10W-30 is excellent for many applications, you must check your owner's manual to confirm the correct viscosity grade for your specific engine to avoid reduced performance or warranty issues.
Yes, the Fel-Pro VS 50687 gasket set includes every part needed for the repair unless otherwise noted, ensuring you do not have to hunt for additional clips or bolts during installation.
Work trucks with frequent stop-and-go driving may require more frequent changes than highway-only vehicles to prevent sludge buildup.
