When we think about getting more done, we tend to think about working harder, exerting more willpower, and buckling down; we tend to think of doing things that are unpleasant, but that we deem worth it, for the productivity boost they offer.

As part of the study, participants were asked about what they wore each day, their feelings about themselves, their productivity and their interactions with colleagues. In total, the study tracked 808 employee days in the workplace and found that those who dressed better than they usually did had a stronger sense of self-esteem and performed better on tasks.

"Ali takes productivity advice to the next level. It's more than just to-do list hacks and note-taking apps. He's created a holistic approach which integrates productivity into your world to help you achieve what ultimately matters most - a life well lived."

An extensive study into happiness and productivity has found that workers are 13% more productive when happy. The research was conducted in the contact centres of British telecoms firm BT over a six month period by Jan-Emmanuel De Neve (Sad Business School, University of Oxford) George Ward (MIT) and Clement Bellet (Erasmus University Rotterdam).

I was reading 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, and got to the part about Pareto's 80/20, where he says that 20% of our efforts or activities give us 80% of our happiness or enjoyment (something to that effect). So I stopped to think about that, and wondered what 20% of my day gave me the most satisfaction. And then I realized that going to the gym, watching videos helping me improve my skill and reading whatever books I was reading all gave me good feelings, and at the end of the week I was feeling much better about myself.

I also realized, as a result, that whatever gaming I did gave me little satisfaction at the end of the week. And to be honest that's confusing for me, because I don't know what else to do when I'm not being productive. Can I actually be productive 80% of my day? Can I be productive the whole day? If I try to do that will I accumulate fatigue and end up being tired? Since I sometimes feel overwhelmed or tired?

Today, we're living in a world of squiggly careers, where moving frequently and fluidly between roles, industries, locations and even careers, is becoming the new normal. Squiggly careers can feel stressful and overwhelming, but if you know how to make the most of them, they can be full of opportunity, freedom and purpose. And to make the most of our increasingly squiggly careers we need to answer some important questions: What am I good at? What do I stand for? What motivates and drives me? Where do I want to go in the future?

The secret to productivity isn't discipline. It's joy.  We think that productivity is all about hard work. That the road to success is lined with endless frustration and toil.
