GENERAL PROJECTS

FOODS AND NUTRITION TIPS

Happy February, which from a nutritional standpoint is awareness month for Cervical Cancer Screening, National Birth Defects Awareness, National Glaucoma Awareness, Thyroid Disease Awareness, National Blood Donor month and contains both National Folic Acid Awareness Week and Healthy Weight Week.  Whew - that's a lot!  Why you might ask, because as a population we are getting more unhealthy. Risk of disease is increasing and according to some research average life expectancy is decreasing.

117 Million Americans adults have one of more chronic diseases and 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese. Unfortunately, patterns for metabolism, food preference, and self-care start in childhood and current studies show that college students are unable to cook for themselves or afford nutritious food so they eat out even more than previous generations did.

This is why food and nutrition matters - eating healthy means being healthy. Meal preparation, planning, and healthy eating can keep us healthy for life, significantly reducing risks of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.  Don't know how to cook or eat healthy? No problem, that's what the Foods and Nutrition Projects are here to help with 🙂

If eating healthy means being healthy, then how are you helping your health today?

Learn about the Breeds!

By Alessia Daelli, 4x4 Dog Club Reporter

Have you ever heard of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, or for short, Toller? Tollers are in the AKC Sporting Breed Group and were bred by hunters to lure ducks and geese toward shore by playing and splashing in the water. Tollers are known for their signature scream. It sounds like a very high-pitched and frantic bark that they do when they are excited. Most tollers are expected to live for 12-14 years. As far as grooming goes it is essential to groom Tollers once a week. This keeps their coat looking its best. But if it is shedding season Tollers require a daily bruising. Tollers have a medium to high energy level so they need to exercise physically everyday. To keep your Toller exercised and happy you can participate in sports such as agility, flyball, and fieldwork. The best way to train Tollers is reward-based. It is best to do short, fun and effective training sessions to get the best result.

Now you have heard all about Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers and you are ready to get your next puppy.

PURCHASING MARKET ANIMALS FOR YOUR 4-H PROJECTS

It's time to think about purchasing your next market animal! When it comes to purchasing animals for a 4-H project, as always, purchasing any animal is up to the family's discretion. Things you may want to consider include: personal finances, current market prices, feed prices, and costs for overall care.

As we approach the new 4-H year, make sure that you discuss as a family what animal and how many animals you would like to purchase! We recommend consulting the Market Animal Budget Planner to help guide your discussions.

HIPPOLOGY TEAM

Boulder County 4-H Hippology Team – Stars!

The Boulder County 4-H Hippology Team, consisting of Mackenzie Weber, Joseph Schmid, Anna Thomas and Josie Thomas, recently competed in the hippology contest at the National Western Roundup in Denver in January of 2023. After two days of testing, judging and presenting solutions to four team problems, the team was awarded a Reserve Champion, with first place in team problems and second in exam phase, stations and judging. Overall, Mackenzie placed fifth, Joseph seventh (tying for sixth), Anna tenth and Josie eleventh.

(Mackenzie, Anna, Josie and Joseph at Roundup)

The team has had a very successful prior two years, with many high placings as both individuals and as a team. In October 2022, the team of Mackenzie, Joseph, Anna and Desiree Shaklee traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the AQHA Congress hippology contest. At that contest, the team placed third overall out of a field of fifteen teams. Mackenzie was Reserve Champion individual, Joseph was tenth overall, and Anna was tenth in the judging phase.

(Joseph, Jessi, Donna, Mackenzie and Sequoia with their awards

at Arabian Nationals)

To start this impressive journey, Mackenzie, Joseph and Sequoia competed as individuals at the state hippology contest in 2021. The three were not eligible to compete as a team as Sequoia had already competed at Roundup, and a minimum of three members are needed to compete as a team. When placings were announced, Mackenzie was first, Sequoia third and Joseph fifth, earning them the right to compete at the Arabian Nationals contest.

(Joseph, Anna, Desi and Mackenzie at AQHA Congress)

In June of 2022, the team of Mackenzie, Joseph and Desiree competed in the hippology contest at the Colorado State 4-H Conference, where they were named the State Champion Team. At that contest individual placings were especially impressive with Mackenzie placing first, Desiree second and Joseph third.

(Joseph, Mackenzie, Sequoia and Jessi)

(Desi, Mackenzie and Joseph at State Conference)

In late October 2021 the team of Mackenzie, Joseph, Sequoia Stark and Jessi Jacobucci traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete in the Arabian National Horse Show hippology contest. At that contest, the team was again named the Champion team with Mackenzie the Champion individual and Sequoia fifth overall and many individual top-ten placings in each phase of the contest. The win at the Arabian Nationals contest meant each team member was awarded a scholarship and a buckle, plus a scholarship and a jacket for Mackenzie as Champion individual. In addition, the team received a trophy which will be engraved with their names.
