About ducks with do's and don'ts that might help in the future. Also talking a bit about the Winchester Duck Sanctuary.
Hello! We are Girl Scout troops 146 and 1807. As our Silver Award project, we chose to help our friends and neighbors in our community. We chose to partner with the Duck Sanctuary located in Winchester, California.
We would like to share some facts and information that most people don’t know, but we have learned through many hours with these friendly animals.
Ducks cannot eat bread because their feathers will turn outwards and look a bit like bat wings.
Most duck veterinarians are hard to find.
Some of the duck breeds have major health complications.
There are many human foods that ducks are not able to eat, like chocolate, citrus fruits, onions, spinach, garlic, nuts, and potatoes.
Ducks CAN eat peas, oats, lettuce, rice, seeds, sweetcorn, cracked corn, worms, many types of fruits, vegetables, and duck pellets. Did you know that ducks can eat cheerios? Unlike bread, they are, in fact, safe for ducks to eat.
Our friend Howard, who owns and operates The Duck Sanctuary, has taught us a lot. The way that Howard usually gets these ducks and other birds is quite sad. People will buy baby ducklings for Easter, and since not many people know how to take care of these ducks, they think that it would be a good idea to drop them off at ponds or even lakes. Luckily, these ducks get picked up by Howard. A couple of reasons you don't want ducks are ducks are messy and poop every 15 minutes. They dont have manners and are full-grown and no longer "cute" in a matter of a short eight weeks.
If you would like to go visit The Duck Sanctuary and continue our mission of helping these rescued water fowls, you can find Howard and the Duck Sanctuary on Google and Facebook. The links are below.
