Associate Professor of Computer Science
Program Director, B.S. in Information Technology
St. John’s University, New York
Dr. Fazel Keshtkar is an accomplished computer scientist, educator, and researcher whose contributions span across Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Educational Technology. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and the Program Director for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at St. John’s University. Under his leadership and that of his colleagues, the IT and CS programs have maintained ABET accreditation and expanded their reach and relevance, integrating cutting-edge topics such as generative AI, cybersecurity, and human-computer interaction.
With over two decades of experience in teaching, mentoring, and research, Dr. Keshtkar has made significant advances in AI-driven educational systems, most notably through his pioneering work on adaptive AI tutoring systems for coding education. His research blends GenAI, LLMs, student modeling, and dialog systems to create scalable, personalized learning environments. This work has earned NSF support, including a prestigious I-Corps award, and is the foundation of his forthcoming proposals under NSF’s RITEL and CISE core programs.
Dr. Keshtkar’s research portfolio is deeply interdisciplinary, spanning sentiment analysis, burnout detection in healthcare professionals, aviation safety communication using AI copilots, and human-AI interaction modeling. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, served as a reviewer for top-tier publications including IEEE TKDE, and co-authored influential white papers such as Risks and Opportunities of Open-Source Generative AI as part of the Meta AI Research Community.
He has been actively involved in professional service, including a multi-year tenure as Conference Chair of the FLAIRS conference (2019–2023) and as founder and organizer of the Applied Natural Language Processing (ANLP) special track. As an ABET Program Evaluator (PEV), Dr. Keshtkar has conducted rigorous reviews of computing programs nationwide, contributing to the quality assurance of CS and IT education.
His dedication to student success is evident through his advising and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom have presented at national venues and published under his guidance. Dr. Keshtkar also leads outreach efforts through IT program open houses, high school engagement initiatives, and partnerships with the IBM AI Alliance, advocating for experiential learning and career readiness in the AI era.
Dr. Keshtkar holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science with specialization in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. His scholarly and pedagogical philosophy reflects a deep commitment to ethical, equitable, and innovative applications of AI in society.
