PhD, DEA, DEEEng.
Associate Professor of Automatic Control and Industrial Systems
Anas Fattouh is an Associate Professor at Mälardalen University (MDU), Sweden, with over twenty years of experience in academic and applied research in control engineering and industrial systems. He received a Diploma in Automatic Control and Industrial Electronics from University of Aleppo in 1992, followed by a DEA (MSc) in 1997 and a PhD in Automatic Control from Grenoble Institute of Technology, France, in 2000. In 2024, he was awarded the academic qualification of Docent in Industrial Systems at MDU.
His research is centered on Automatic Control, Simulation Optimization, Industrial Systems, Digital Twins, and Battery Modelling, with a focus on the integration of model-based and data-driven approaches. He develops methods for analyzing, simulating, and optimizing complex systems, combining control theory, computational modeling, and data analytics to support intelligent decision-making in dynamic and uncertain industrial environments.
A central theme in his work is the development of simulation-based and digital twin-driven platforms for industrial applications. His research addresses both foundational aspects, such as control design and system modeling, and applied challenges in quarry and off-road operations, smart manufacturing, and energy systems. In these domains, he focuses on performance prediction, operational optimization, and the design of energy-efficient and robust systems, including battery performance modelling for electrified machinery.
He is currently leading the TESTED-SOS project at MDU, building on the outcomes of the TRUST-SOS project in collaboration with Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE). The project develops a digital twin-based simulation and optimization platform for quarry and construction sites, integrating physical models, operational data, and decision-support algorithms. The goal is to enable improved planning, autonomous operation, and energy-aware control of industrial systems in demanding environments.
In addition to research, he is actively engaged in teaching and supervision in areas such as Smart Factories, Big Data and Cloud Computing for Industrial Applications, and Applied AI for Manufacturing. His teaching emphasizes experiential learning, integration of digital technologies, and strong connections between theory and industrial practice, where students work with real-world problems using simulation platforms, virtual environments, and data-driven tools.
Through his research, teaching, and collaboration with industry and academia, Anas Fattouh contributes to the advancement of intelligent industrial systems, digital engineering, and sustainable electrified operations.
