PhD, DEA, DEEEng.
Associate Professor of Automatic Control and Industrial Systems
Anas Fattouh is an Associate Professor at Mälardalen University (MDU), Sweden, with over twenty years of experience in academic and applied research in control engineering and industrial systems. He received a Diploma in Automatic Control and Industrial Electronics from Aleppo University in 1992, followed by a French master’s degree (DEA) in 1997 and a PhD in Automatic Control from Grenoble Institute of Technology (INPG), France, in 2000. In 2024, he was awarded the academic qualification of Docent in Industrial Systems at Mälardalen University, certifying independent research and teaching competence at the university level.
His research focuses on the development and integration of model-based and data-driven methods for analyzing, simulating, and optimizing complex industrial systems. He combines control theory, computational methods, and data analytics to support intelligent decision-making in dynamic and uncertain industrial environments. His work spans both theoretical and applied aspects of industrial systems engineering, with a strong emphasis on digitalization and system-level modeling.
Over the years, his research has addressed a broad range of application domains, including teleoperation systems, brain–computer interfaces (BCI), production and manufacturing systems, smart factories, quarry and off-road operations, and battery management systems. A recurring theme in his work is the use of digital models, such as simulation, digital twins, and hybrid modeling approaches, to improve system performance, robustness, and sustainability. His research contributes to the design of intelligent control strategies, performance prediction, and operational optimization for complex systems.
He is currently leading the TESTED-SOS project at Mälardalen University, which builds on the outcomes of the TRUST-SOS project. This work is carried out in close collaboration with Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) and Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE). The project focuses on the development and validation of a digital simulation and optimization platform for off-road industrial applications, integrating physical system models, operational data, and decision-support algorithms. The objective is to enable improved planning, control, and energy-efficient operation of industrial machinery in demanding environments.
In addition to research, Anas Fattouh is actively engaged in higher education teaching and supervision. His teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential and student-centered learning, strong links between theory and practice, and the integration of digital technologies in engineering education. He teaches courses such as Smart Factories, Big Data and Cloud Computing for Industrial Applications, and Introduction to Applied AI for the Manufacturing Industry. In these courses, students work with real-world industrial problems using physical laboratories, virtual production environments, and simulation-based tools.
Through his research, teaching, and collaboration with industry and academia, Anas Fattouh aims to contribute to the advancement of intelligent industrial systems, digital engineering methods, and sustainable industrial transformation.
