Upon release, the software site SnapFiles rated it five stars out of five.[6] It also received five stars by the editor of Download.com.[7] A PCWorld magazine review of version 4.0 of FastStone Image Viewer in 2011 noted the software's "lightning-fast" display of pictures. The reviewer felt that one of its greatest advantages was its "wide variety of file formats" the software supports.[8] Rick Broida of CNET wrote in 2015 about version 5.4: "This freeware gem remains an essential download for anyone looking to view, edit and organize their photos." Broida thought that it was a "bit more robust" compared to IrfanView.[2]

Hi, sorry to jump in on this conversation, but I've just recently put Affinity 2 and faststone image viewer on my PC (finally ditched Adobe) I found this conversation as I'm trying to link the 2 together so I can edit using external program, I've gone into settings but can't fathom out how to do it, can anyone give me step by step guidance please ?

One of the apps I really love in Windows is Faststone Image Viewer (free). I use it a lot for image tagging, organizing, etc. It's a fantastic app. I love my Mac for everything else so this isn't about PC vs Mac. Just looking for suggestions.

I am looking for something similar for Mac... I have the Adobe Photoshop Subscription so I already have Lightroom and Bridge but for quick image finding and tagging Faststone is the fastest app around. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!

FastStone Image Viewer's name is slightly misleading, as it is both an image viewer for photographies and an editor. While it can't compete with the nifty features in leading image-editing suites, it's viewing options are top notch.

FastStone Image Viewer comes with a great range of image viewing options. First off, there is the standard file browser that displays thumbnails of your images with a preview window for the file that is currently selected. The program also offers an option to check out individual pictures in full-screen mode and as a slideshow with different background effects, as well as the ability to zoom and magnify your photos.

Other options include the ability to compare up to four images side by side so you can decide which ones you want to keep, as well as tag your images (with location) and view EXIF information (camera settings and scene data).

However, FastStone Image Viewer goes beyond simply displaying images. You can perform quick edits to really bring out the best in your pics, such as adding a stylish frame that acts as a mask to reduce the sharp edges or adding borders, watermarks, and sketch and oil painting effects.

When you are viewing your images in full-screen mode you can still access the different tools by hovering your mouse over the four corners of the screen, which is a useful trick and helps make the program more user-friendly. Or you can right click on the screen to get some basic navigation and editing options.

There's healthy competition in the image viewer arena and FastStone Image Viewer offers plenty of great features in a fairly easy-to-use (if not very attractive) package. However, the program seems to be having an identity crisis and can't quite decide if it's an image editor or viewer. If FastStone Image Viewer sticks to developing its range of great options for viewing images then it will remain a top choice to download. The portable version can be found on the developer's website. Finally, if you are looking for more free alternatives to this program, we recommend you to download IrfanView or XnView.

FastStone Image Viewer is an image browser, viewer, converter and editor with an easy-to-use interface and a nice array of features that include resizing, renaming, cropping, color adjustments and more. It also includes an intuitive full-screen mode that provides quick access to EXIF information and thumbnail browser via hidden toolbars that emerge when you touch the edge of your screen with the mouse.

Other features include a high quality magnifier and built-in slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image frames, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats including BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA.

This is a very neat piece of software. I use this program for culling RAWs, or just for viewing RAWs. Even though my PC is decidedly slow, viewing RAWs is practically instant with FastStone. I would say it's at least 10x faster than using the default Windows Photos viewer. I really like this piece of software, especially as it's free. Also, there's a portable version, so you can try it without even installing it! Altogether very useful. Alternatives?: Irfanview , XN View , FastRAWViewer (paid) ...

This is my default image viewer and the fastest software I've used for culling thousands of raw images. Reads and displays the embedded jpegs rapidly, renders the raw in a reasonable time if I need to inspect at 100%, and sends the ones I choose where I want them. No idea about it's editing features - I use it for the purpose for which it is named: an Image Viewer. For that it excels.

I will get the negatives out of the way first. If you want to work with raw files, forget faststone, other software is much better. Faststone works well on JPEGs. Main omissions that prevent me from giving 5 stars are an eye dropper for setting the WB in one go. An instant fix facility and a pseudo colour temperature slider that works similar to Raw developers. Now the good points. It is fast, even on modest hardware. Has most basic functions and they work well. I love the shadow/highlight ...

Best free editor/viewer out there. V 5.1 (which is the one I have) handles multiple file types including .raw files from all of the major camera manufacturers and saves in many formats including .tif files. Shows Exif data and histogram. Has all the basic editing tools you need clone and heal, curves, levels, sharpening, noise reduction, (which is fairly good for photos that aren't too extreme) and one I really like, they called "Lighting Adjustments" which is basically like Photoshop's ...

I think that this software is excellent! The features include things like image conversion,red-eye removal, selective editing, straitening, and is very quick. This is a photo I have edited with this software

Sure, if you let the software manipulate the PPI value for you by automatically determining the value based on the number of pixels the the output size you specify, then your value is not taken into consideration.

PRINT_SIZE (in inches) = PIXEL_SIZE (in pixels) / PPI (pixels per inch)

Manipulate that expression any way you would like - that does not, however, change the fact that the PPI value determines the physical size of the print based on how many pixels there are and the PPI value. Your use of other software to automatically manipulate the PPI value for you is just a different way of changing the PPI value to get the print size you want.

PPI does not change how an image is displayed on a display, unless the user chooses to view at "Print Size" (Photoshop, View > Print Size) or a similar mode, where the physical size of the displayed image will be shown at the physical dimensions of, for example, the print output (within the limits of the physical size of the display) - that is, you can take a ruler and measure the length of the displayed image edge, and it should correspond to the length of the printed image in that special display mode (see attached photo taken with my iPhone of my display). The display pixel density needs to be specified or detected automatically by the software to achieve this view mode.

You can figure out the display density by taking the number of pixels in a row of the display and dividing that value by the physical length of the edge of the display area, in inches, for example. My Eizo display measures 20.4 inches along the long edge, and its pixel resolution in this dimension is 1920 pixels. The pixel density is 1920 px / 20.4 in = 94 PPI. This value can be entered into the preferences of a specific application, if supported, to view "Print Size."

The "Zoom Level" is used to change the display of an image on a display - typically "100%" means one image pixel occupies one display pixel at native display resolution - however, applications on Retina and other highDPI displays may scale images so that one image pixel occupies more than one display pixel at 100%.

The thing to remember is that if you're saving images to e-mail or use on a web page, you want to use a JPG Quality of about 70. If you create a lot of web pages, you might want to change the setting here to 70, otherwise, go with the default of 90. The other setting you might want to change is "Use Quality from original file", but again I usually leave it checked here and override as necessary.

JPG Quality is another way of talking about how highly compressed an image is when stored. Each program has it's own way of measuring compression, or quality. Photoshop uses a scale of 1-12 and names a few of them: Photoshop calls 10 Maximum, 8 High, 5 Medium, and 3 Low. As you see FastStone uses a scale of 1-100. Original, best quality, images from one of my cameras have a quality of 98 on this scale. The table below shows the file sizes of a single image saved at different Quality settings using Photoshop and FastStone: ff782bc1db
