Firefox was created by Mozilla as a faster, more private alternative to browsers like Internet Explorer, and now Chrome. Today, our mission-driven company and volunteer community continue to put your privacy above all else.

We spent many hours comparing the best web browsers in terms of speed using a handful of tests on Windows and Mac. We provide the results in our Methodology section to show which is the fastest web browser on your favorite desktop platform.

Get Google Chrome Google Chrome is the fastest web browser you can get on a Windows machine. It surpasses the competition in three out of four tests, outranking even Microsoft Edge in all but one test.

Firefox received a facelift in 2021. Mozilla redesigned the tabs, prompts, menus, and overall look, giving Firefox a new modern interface. Under the hood, Firefox strives to keep you safe online with tools like DNS-over-HTTPS, which encrypts browser requests versus sending the information in plaintext.

Get Vivaldi Vivaldi breathes new life into the tired, repetitive web browser design. Here you can customize the start page, create and use a custom theme, customize and move the menu, customize the toolbar, and so on. You can also assign browser commands to keyboard shortcuts, map commands to gestures, and assign quick commands to the Function keys.

Get Opera The Opera browser is great if you want built-in social network tools. The sidebar includes shortcuts to Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and three others you can pin to the browser window.

A browser should make secure connections to websites. They should also provide means to block malicious advertisements, cross-site trackers, cryptominers, and fingerprinters. Users should have tools to block and delete cookies, secure their passwords, and use the browser without worrying about how it collects their data.

Chrome is our biggest performer, taking the top spot in three out of four tests. Microsoft Edge always comes in at a close second, save for one test where it switches seats with Chrome. Firefox is our lowest performer of the browser batch.

Overall, Safari and Chrome go head to head for the fastest browser. Safari grabs the top spot in two tests, while Chrome dominates in the other two. Microsoft Edge is the best alternative to Safari and Chrome, while Firefox has the lowest performance of the six.

A User Identifier (User ID) is a unique profile created by the browser and stored locally as a cookie. This profile includes information such as your processor, storage, screen resolution, and operating system.

HTML5 is the fifth generation of HyperText Markup Language (HTML), the programming language that creates websites you see in your browser. There are three components in HTML5: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) that dictate how web page elements are displayed, JavaScript that executes interactive components, and HTML code that brings it all together.

In a nutshell, the browser (client) sends a request to the server hosting a website. In turn, the server sends the appropriate files to your device that are pieced together within your browser. These files reside on your device as cache.

Safari 5.1.7 was the last version released on Windows. While you can find links to download the browser, Apple discontinued Windows support in 2012. We do not recommend this browser for Windows users due to the lack of updates and customer support.

Microsoft retired Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, but it still lives on in Microsoft Edge as IE Mode. To enable it for legacy websites, click the Settings and more button in the top right corner of Microsoft Edge, followed by Settings > Default browser > Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode. Select Allow on the drop-down menu to enable IE Mode.

I've been seeing a lot of stuff about firefox being faster, and yet any data I look up from actual tests says chrome or edge are the fastest. I've also heard some talk of vivaldi having nice features, but it's apparently noticeably slower as a tradeoff. What should I choose?

Our actual daily usage won't be running 1 million JS on a page. faster JS only doesn't mean faster page loading time in real life. There are much more than that, e.g. cache handling, media handling, DNS handling, TLS handling, etc of the browser.

Testing and comparing default settings for all browsers are meaningless. You are not actually using default settings without any extensions, custom settings, etc. A browser is the fastest with the default setting doesn't mean it is the fastest for your settings.

So, if you are looking for the fastest browser for your daily use like me, you can just install Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, etc. Install the actual extensions that you use (e.g. UBO, Grammarly) and config the browser settings properly based on your preference. And install the Page Load Time extension ( -load-time/fploionmjgeclbkemipmkogoaohcdbig)

Now, you can open the browsers you want to compare and simulate how you will use your browser daily, visiting different pages, sites, and apps that you use every day and maintaining multiple tabs, And you'll clearly see which browser is actually the fastest for you and your computer! You can also monitor Task Manager alongside for their resource consumption if you care much about it.

For myself, I'm using Corsair One with 32GB RAM and NVMe. I use UBO for Chrome/Edge/Firefox and Shield for Brave. All the other extensions that I used are installed in all browsers, and all custom settings have been applied to each browser.

Chrome and Edge were so close in each of our tests that they hardly differed from one another. The one test where Edge bested Chrome was in JetStream 2, where it got the upper hand by just a hair. In practice, they are equally fast and responsive browsers.

Brave, Opera and Vivaldi make up the remainder of our top five. Once again, their performance was so close that they went up and down the rankings by very small margins. The biggest differences emerged in the MotionMark test, where Brave was clearly the faster browser when rendering complex visual graphics, but they are all acceptably fast browsers in practice.

Edge was faster than Chrome for advanced JavaScript responsiveness in this test, but by a very slight margin. Meanwhile, Chromium raced ahead of Brave, Opera and Vivaldi while lagging behind in the other tests.

Chrome is the most popular internet browser (with an estimated global market share of around 60%) in the world and, currently, the fastest. It took first place in all but one of our tests, and was very close to Edge where it fell into second place.

Without any extensions installed, Chrome responded well to a range of JavaScript applications and complex visual graphics. Some of the browsers in this list were better at some tasks rather than others, but Chrome delivers uniform results across the board.

In practice, Edge is every bit as fast as Chrome. It used to be much slower before it was redesigned with Chromium in 2020, but now it can process JavaScript web applications and render visuals with ease.

We praise Opera and Vivaldi highly, but because Opera is the overall faster browser, we chose to place it higher up on this list. Read our full Opera review and Opera vs Chrome guides for more details.

We like Brave for being a private and secure browser. It was designed with privacy in mind from the beginning, featuring a built-in ad-blocker, HTTPS Everywhere and an innovative advertising model that protects your privacy rather than compromising it.

We tested many more browsers than the five you see above. The remainder of the browsers were obviously not as fast, but there were a few with other noteworthy traits that make up for their slower speeds.

Chromium maintained sluggish speeds during two of our tests, but snagged third place in JetStream 2. Chromium and Chrome are almost exactly the same because Chromium is the open-source browser framework Chrome is based on.

Chromium is intended for use in browser development rather than for general consumer browsing, and is therefore very unstable. Be sure to read our Chromium vs Chrome to learn how the two browser foundations compare.

It was a close race in this round of browser speed tests. Chrome and Edge were just about tied for first, but the victory ultimately goes to Chrome by a small margin. Brave, Opera and Vivaldi fought hard to win the runner-up positions and are just about equal in overall performance, but some of these browsers found their strengths where others were weak.

What do you think of our five fastest selections? Do you think our criteria and ranking were fair? Was there an even faster browser than Chrome that we overlooked? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and as always, thanks for reading.

These are my scores on my M1 MBP for Safari on Ventura beta:

Speedometer: 340, motionmark: 3063, Jetstream 221. Brave and chrome were close, Firefox less than half on Jetstream, Other browsers were about 40% of Safari on Motionmark, No other browser even topped 300 on speedometer. So probably windows then, way faster than your published results

Whether browsing the web for critical research or casually browsing online content, a web browser is a gateway to the online world. The speed and efficiency of your browser can significantly impact your efficiency or how frustrated you might get when the browser gets stuck randomly.

The Turbo Mode feature ensures that all web pages are compressed before loading them, thus reducing the loading times considerably, even on slower internet connections. Since our goal is to understand which browsers are the fastest, this feature ensures that Opera One takes the lead. 2351a5e196
