The vertical and horizontal buttons on it function as the D-pad of a keypad-based mobile phone, while the diagonal ones function as the buttons 1 (the northwest button), 3 (the northeast one), 7 (the southwest one), and 9 (the southeast one). On the top-left is a virtual button with an arrow icon pointing to the left on it; it is used to exit the game that is currently running. In the upper central (completely central except for being located above the long L, R, and pause/resume buttons in the horizontal mode) area is the game's screen, below which are 3 buttons (2 in the compilations released before 2019): L (functioning as the left soft key of a keypad-based phone), a button with two thin vertical lines on it positioned side-by-side (the "pause" icon; used to pause the game without opening the in-game pause menu, freezing all processes, and disable the D-pad, soft keys, A, B, X, and Y's functionality; when it is tapped, a trianglular arrow pointing to the right (the "play/resume" icon) appears on it, and the button unfreezes the game and re-enables all buttons' functionality when tapped again), and R (functioning as the right soft key of a keypad-based phone).
