Following on from our research into how fonts are used in the beauty and automotive industries, in part three we take a look at ten luxury fashion brands. What is the most fashionable font style? How do these brands use typefaces to stand out from competitors, and are there opportunities that are being missed?

A high contrast, delicate serif typeface named Sterling by Hoefler Type Foundry is used in both the logo and as the primary font. Due to the wispy nature of the hairlined strokes the type disappears at small sizes especially on the navigation menu. Set in all caps for the menu and captions and upper and lowercase for body copy it looks luxurious and elegant. Humanist sans Avenir Next (and Helvetica) are also used in some sections offering a modern twist.

The Dior wordmark personifies elegance alongside the rich and dynamic full screen images which work well with the fonts to create a sense of style, class and sophistication. The supporting typeface is Century Gothic, with the captions set in all caps and the body copy in upper and lowercase. The use of Century Gothic Light makes the text appear grey which knocks it back. The website also uses system font Arial.

The Prada logo is a bespoke modern serif, which is bold, iconic and distinctive. The brand uses large moving images on their website that span the whole layout with minimal typography. The main nagivation menu is set in Univers all caps with the body copy set in a free open source font called Source Sans Pro. Prada have missed an opportunity to reflect their style in their typography which looks like an after thought.

The Burberry logo is a bespoke expanded version of Bodoni, a modern serif style that conveys high quality and luxury. Proxima Nova is the primary font used for headings, caption settings and body copy in both upper and lowercase. A lot of the type (navigation and text) is small and difficult to read. The secondary typeface (Times), is another unimaginative choice that is free to use.

Most of the brands contrast large, bold photography with subtle minimal typography. There are many similarities to the beauty sector where white space, bold colours, geometric and high contrast fonts are frequently used. Geometric sans serifs are very popular when it comes to the primary font choice and are used by 70% of the brands we looked at. Futura and Proxima Nova are the most popular compared with Gotham in the beauty sector. None of the ten brands we looked at are using a custom font and 40% are using browser safe typefaces like Times and Arial.

Alta is a sans-serif typeface designed by Aaron Amar. It is a versatile font with a modern and clean look, characterized by its rounded corners and balanced letterforms. The Alta font family includes a regular weight, a bold weight, and an all-caps display humanist typeface. The regular weight is suitable for body text, while the bold weight can be used for headings and titles. The all-caps display typeface is ideal for use in logos and branding materials.

Mirza is a serif typeface designed by Indian type designer, Shiva Nalleperumal. It is inspired by traditional Indian calligraphy and features distinctive ornamental details. The Mirza font family includes four weights: light, regular, semi-bold, and bold, and it supports multiple languages including Devanagari and Latin scripts. The letterforms in Mirza are elegant and sophisticated, with high contrast between the thick and thin strokes, and intricate details in the serifs. Mirza is a versatile typeface that can be used in a variety of applications, including editorial design, branding, and advertising.

Playfair Display is a typeface inspired by letterforms from the eighteenth century, yet with a modern feel. It was designed by Claus Eggers Srensen in 2011 and is known for its elegant serifs and high legibility. Playfair Display is often used in fashion, luxury, and high-end branding, as well as editorial designs.

Wordmarks are the trending logo style for all industries. One disadvantage of using only logotype is that the mark can feel less memorable than using a logo symbol (example 12) next to your text mark. However, an easy way to add memorability to your wordmark is by swapping one letter with another one that stands out more. See example 11, the letters Q and O are square shapes.

They were highly popular during the mid 1900s when the Didone display variant, known as Fat Faces, emerged. Fat Faces could be found everywhere on the record artwork, newspaper headlines, advertisements, and book cover designs of the era.

Glamor is a perfect elegant font for any stylish design that needs a little bit more sophistication. It looks great in large titles and intertwined with background elements.

The classic style Fenix font has only one weight in capital and lowercase letters. Fernando Diaz designed this elegant font to work well in both titles and long text. It is available as both desktop version and webfont. This font is great for both printed materials and websites.

This calligraphy style serif font designed by Bernd Montag in 2007 has become one of a few classic elegant web fonts available for free. Chantelli Antiqua is great for text in invitations or titles in labels and tags. It works great paired with a simple sans font as well.

Vollkorn is a versatile elegant font family in four weights in both regular and italic. Designed by German designer Friedrick Althausen in 2005, this font is great not only for uppercase titles but also for long text in printed novels and websites. Vollkorn looks great in product labels and as a webfont.

Designer Yai Salinas created this font inspired by the classic Didot font. The added detailed dots give it a special sense of style in both uppercase and lowercase letters. This is a great font for specialty beverage labels or editorial titles in both printed and digital formats.
