Revolutionary War Connection

Major William McMahon, a Soldier and Surgeon in the Revolutionary War, was born on this date, Jan. 9, in 1749, in Delaware. His great-grandaughter was Matilda McMahon Westbrook, one of the original members of Farr's Chapel.

Major McMahon served in the 4th & 3rd Va. Regiments, and later, at Fort Recovery in Western Ohio. On June 30, 1794, combined Native American forces from the Shawnee and Miami nations attacked the fort. McMahon was leading a supply convoy back to the fort when he was killed in the attack. A museum now stands at Fort Recovery, Ohio. McMahon is named on a bronze plaque and historical marker at Fort Recovery, where he is buried.

Over the years, McMahon's son and grandson made their way south to the Republic of Texas. In 1873, McMahon's great-grandaughter Matilda McMahon and her husband, Joshua Westbrook, donated the original land for Farr's Chapel Cemetery, where they are both buried.
