Farooq Hussain's intellectual life began not in a laboratory or a lecture hall but at a drafting table. After a foundation year at St. Martin's School of Art, he enrolled at the Architectural Association School in London, where he joined Keith Critchlow — mathematician, geometer, and disciple of Buckminster Fuller — as a research assistant. The work was model-making in the deepest sense: geodesic structures, complex spatial geometries, and molecular models including water-to-ice phase transitions produced for J.D. Bernal's crystallography group. Through Critchlow he also encountered the physicist David Bohm, whose ideas about the nature of communication sharpened Hussain's thinking about an unlikely subject: the relationship between dolphin echolocation and whistle patterns as a possible model for language itself — an interest that fed his first book, Living Underwater (1971).
That chain of introductions eventually led him to Maurice Wilkins at King's College London, where he spent four years in the Biophysics department during one of the most consequential periods in the history of science. He later reconstructed the original Watson–Crick double helix model from surviving components that had been dismantled and thought lost; that facsimile is now on permanent display at the Science Museum, London.
The pivot from molecular biophysics to nuclear strategy might seem abrupt. It wasn't. The same instinct that drove the model-making work — the need to construct a precise representation of something invisible and dangerous — carried directly into his doctorate at King's, where he worked under Professor Laurence Martin on strategic, theatre, and tactical nuclear weapons in Europe. From there he joined the International Institute for Strategic Studies, published an Adelphi Paper on nuclear and ballistic missile test restrictions, and held Ford Foundation fellowships with Sidney Drell at Stanford and Paul Doty at Harvard — two of the architects of American arms control thinking. He later served on the senior scientific staff at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and as Director of Studies at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
A second pivot followed. In the early 1990s he moved to the United States and into the infrastructure of what would become the commercial internet, serving as Principal Investigator and NAP Manager at the National Science Foundation during the transition of NSFNET to commercial operation — one of the hinge moments of the digital age. As part of the NSF's International Connections program, he helped extend Internet access to developing nations, including establishing the first connection to China. Leadership roles at Sprint, MCI, and other telecommunications firms followed.
Since 2021 he has returned to writing and analysis full time. His Substack, *Ariadne's Dispatches*, covers nuclear arms control, science history, and the politics of scientific knowledge; his podcast, *Icarus*, features long-form conversations with scientists working at the edges of their fields. Three books are in active development: a revised paperback edition of *The Last Treaty: Innovation, Nuclear Risk, and the End of Arms Control*; a biography of Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin using Wallace's own unpublished outline as its structural spine; and a study of Rosalind Franklin and the politics of scientific credit built on his direct experience working under Maurice Wilkins.
