Graduate Research Assistant (February 2025-Present)

Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of South Florida (USF), Tampa, FL

Conduct doctoral research on point-of-use activated carbon drinking water filters, focusing on the interactions between biofilm growth, flushing dynamics, and stagnation under realistic household use conditions.

Designed and executed controlled flushing and stagnation experiments, including pre-flush and post-flush sampling, to evaluate nitrogen transformations, microbial detachment, and water quality degradation.

Performed nitrification assessment using monochloramine, total chlorine, free chlorine, and ammonia measurements to evaluate biofilm-mediated nitrogen cycling.

Applied advanced analytical techniques including GC-MS, Ion Chromatography (IC), ammonia analyzer, and flow cytometry to quantify nitrogen species, and microbial cell concentrations.

Measured supporting physicochemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, ORP, temperature) to interpret biogeochemical and microbial processes within filter systems.

Contribute to ongoing research examining disinfection byproduct formation during routine operation and seasonal chlorine burn events.

Evaluated the feasibility of plastic waste–assisted bio-oil production, focusing on the physical and thermal properties of thermoplastics (polyethylene) to enhance yield and scalability.

Conducted laboratory characterization using FTIR, GC-MS, GC-FID, LC-MS, XRD, SEM, and TOC to assess fuel quality, chemical composition, and conversion efficiency.
