San Jose de Buenavista is the capital municipality of the Province of Antique, located on the western coast of Panay Island. It serves as a hub for business, education, and tourism, and is connected by land, air, and sea. The municipality is generally flat, with a coastline, two major river systems, and numerous creeks.
Old Antique Provincial Capitol: This building is a historic landmark in San Jose, as it is the former provincial capitol and now serves as the home of the National Museum of the Philippines in the province. It houses the "Paghabul sa Antique" textile gallery, which showcases the province's weaving traditions.
The St. Joseph Cathedral in San Jose, Antique is the seat of the diocese and is known for its distinctive architecture and unique design. While many of its original features were demolished and replaced, the site has an extensive history of spiritual significance. It features the tallest bell tower in Antique, and the current structure has been modified over the years to incorporate different styles, including an exterior with a facade that some have compared to ancient structures.
Ruins of the Old San Pedro Church
Located in Barangay San Pedro, these are the remains of a Spanish colonial-era church built by Augustinian missionaries. Originally constructed with a distinctive Latin cross design, the church was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to fires and earthquakes. The ruins stand as a significant historical site that gives a glimpse into the region's early history with Christianity.
Casa Azurin, or Bahay na Bato, is a historic house in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique. It is considered one of the province’s most prominent remnants of Spanish influence. The old ‘bahay na kahoy at bato’ of the Azurin family is the only remaining intact structure of Spanish houses in the province, which speaks of its historical and cultural attributes in Antique.
Situated in front of the Antique Provincial Capitol building, this park is a tribute to former governor Evelio B. Javier, who was assassinated in 1986 for his stand against martial law. The park features a brass statue of Javier, created by National Artist and fellow Antiqueño Jeremias Elizalde Navarro.
San Jose Boulevard Esplanade
This modern landmark is a seaside promenade along the San Pedro Coastal Road. The 4.1 km esplanade is a popular spot for leisurely walks, watching the sunset, and enjoying the sea breeze.
Binirayan Hills
Home to the Evelio B. Javier Sports Complex, Binirayan Hills is a site of historical significance and a vantage point offering scenic views of San Jose de Buenavista. It was also the location of the very first Binirayan Festival.
