Family Reading Challenge:
Turning Pages & Making Memories
Reading together as a family is one of the simplest—and coziest—ways to bond, build skills, and nurture a love of books that can last a lifetime. Whether your kids are just learning their ABCs or devouring chapter books, a Family Reading Challenge adds a layer of fun and meaning for everyone involved.
The best part? It’s easy to get started. All you need are a few good books, a comfy spot, and a dash of imagination. Show your kids that reading isn’t just something they do at school—it’s something that opens doors. Books spark imagination, build empathy, fuel curiosity, and help kids dream big.
From snuggling up with picture books at bedtime to celebrating the final page of a first chapter book, the Family Reading Challenge is about more than just turning pages. It’s about connection, laughter, and growing together—one story at a time.
Encourages bonding: Shared stories create inside jokes, new interests, and precious time together.
Models good habits: Kids mimic what they see. When they see YOU reading, they’re more likely to do it too.
Improves literacy and focus: Even just 15 minutes a day builds stronger vocabulary and better comprehension.
Makes reading a treat, not a task: When reading becomes part of the fun, it stops feeling like homework.
1. Set a Goal
Decide on a challenge that works for your family.
“Read 100 books by the end of summer!”
“Everyone reads for 20 minutes a day!”
“Finish one book a week as a team!”
2. Make it Visual
Create a colorful reading chart—decorate with stickers, drawings, or checkmarks.
Turn a big poster board into a “Book Mountain” you climb by adding a title with each read.
Repurpose an old trophy or mason jar into a “Reading Trophy.” Whoever reads the most this week gets to display it proudly!
3. Choose a Prize Everyone Loves
A family game night, movie marathon, picnic, trip to the bookstore, or even a round of ice cream sundaes—pick something the whole crew will get excited about. This way, everyone roots for each other!
4. Get Everyone Involved
Encourage each person to pick a book (or genre) they’re excited about. From graphic novels to audiobooks—anything counts!
Make sure parents and caregivers are reading too. Your example is powerful!
Have older kids read to younger siblings or even to the family pet! It builds confidence and connection.
Include audiobooks on car rides or while working on puzzles or chores. They totally count!
Create a Cozy Reading Nook
Throw some pillows in a corner, add a lamp, a basket of books, and voilà—your own home library. Forts, hammocks, or under-the-table tents make magical reading spots too.
Make it a Theme Night
Read about pirates? Dress up and eat fish sticks! Reading a space adventure? Watch the stars or make a paper rocket! Bring books to life with crafts, snacks, or mini adventures.
Start a Family Book Club
Each person picks a book once a month. At the end, everyone gets to talk about what they read, what they loved (or didn’t), and maybe even act out scenes!
Swap Books with Friends
Trade books with another family or start a “little free library” in your neighborhood. It’s fun to see what others are reading and pass on your favorites.
Visit your Local Public Library The public library is one of the most valuable—and often underappreciated—resources in any community. It's more than just a place to borrow books; it’s a hub of learning, creativity, and connection. Libraries offer access to a wide variety of reading materials for all ages and interests all for free. Many libraries also host story times, craft activities, reading programs, book clubs, and even access to educational games, computers, and homework help. Incorporating library visits into your Family Reading Challenge adds a sense of adventure and variety.
