Family Island

Family Island is an area of camp just for families while camp is in session. Family Island has cabins, RV sites, and tent sites. Family Island is designed for families of Scout leaders to enjoy camp with any non-Scout age members of the family.

The Northern Star Council Camping Committee has developed a policy that provides the families of unit leaders who are in camp the first opportunity to make a reservation at family camp. Families who have members of family registered with Scouting are given next priority to make reservations at family camp. An outline of the reservation process is listed below.

Restored by Sadness and Joy Family Island is one of Riley's Islands of Personality. It represents Riley's time with her family and shows various mementos with them, along with a statue of Riley and her parents. It was formed when young Riley was baking cookies with her parents.

It was the last of the islands to collapse, when Riley was running away back to Minnesota alone. Unlike the other islands, Family Island went down piece by piece instead of all at once, as Riley got close to leaving. It collapsed completely offscreen around the time Joy and Sadness made it back to Headquarters.

After Riley reconciles with her family and Joy and Sadness create a new combined core memory, the island rematerialized with the addition of San Francisco landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, representing Riley finally accepting the town as home.

The Out Islands are the islands that make up the Bahamas with the exception of New Providence Island, where the capital and largest city, Nassau, is located, and Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located.[1][2] The Abaco Islands and Eleuthera islands are among the Out Islands.[3]

A History of the Bahamian People notes that even as Nassau became a more important port, "the majority of the Out Islands remained fixed in the age of sail well into the twentieth century."[5] A significant number of American Loyalists fleeing from the Revolution migrated to the Bahamas (including the Out Islands), along with their slaves, profoundly influencing the islands' history.[6]

Poverty has historically been high in the Out Islands, given the small size of the islands and the lack of natural resources.[12] In 2013, the Bahamas Department of Statistics reported a poverty rate of 17.16% in the Out Islands, compared to 12.58% in Nassau and 9.69% in Grand Bahama.[13]

At the beginning of the 20th century, more than 75% of all Bahamians lived in the Out Islands; by the 1970s, two-thirds of all Bahamians lived in Nassau or elsewhere on New Providence Island.[14] This dramatic population shift was related to a lack of stable job market in the Out Islands; only pineapple cultivation and salt-raking provided steady wage jobs, and only on a few islands.[15] Today, tourism is economically significant in the Out Islands; beaches, snorkeling, and scuba diving are the principal tourist draws.[16] A 2017 academic study reported that the relative economic importance of shark diving was greater in the Out Islands than elsewhere in the Bahamas.[13]
