Your Local Public Library

Your local public library is quite possibly a source for regional historical information and documents. However, an Internet search for your topic is not likely to provide access to these resources and collections. Instead of depending on a search engine, go directly to the library's site and look for information there.

  1. Search Google (or another search engine) for "[insert your community of interest] public library"
  2. Browse the site for links labeled finding aids, research, records, documents, or archives. Historical documents are often placed in special collections and may not be listed in the general library catalog.
  3. On the other hand, these items may be included in the catalog. If you are not able to locate information about genealogical or historical information linked on the website, a search of the online catalog may prove useful. Select general search terms for the source you are looking for. For example, photographs, Chinese AND immigration, slavery, etc. For additional tips, check out the Suggested Keywords at the bottom of this page.
