WEEK 8 - getting closer to playoffs and some teams are starting to exert their dominance while others have been up & down. In ROOKIE Ball, the Tropics had 2 powerful performances, while the Dragons & Lazers went 1-1. Former League leader Blazers went 0-2, but now look to have a full roster - so anything can happen in the playoffs. In JV, The Bombers finally took a loss, & went 1-1, while Big Ballerz went 2-0. Rent a scorer Nathan, and Reece were steadying forces. The Bucks went 1-1, while the DubShots went 0-2. In typical JV fashion, the scores were low. In VARSITY - to no ones surprise the Breakerz are rounding into form. By far the most balanced team struggled in 1st half vs Bulldogs (down 26-10) but kept on battling aided by about as bad shooting (by Bulldogs) as one will see. So maybe we'll call it good defence to be kind. In game 2 the Breakerz drilled the Ballerz by near 20, and once again - balanced attack, with Justin averaging his normal 20 boards a game. Flight also beat the former #1 Ballerz 71-51, with the highlight being Jack's 6 treys. No 2 pointers, only 3's!
I realize by adding comments, scores, and scorers - it will interest some people, and irritate others. I'm just trying to add a little summary & maybe some insight/levity etc. Just having a little fun. If your son (or you) is wondering why they didn't get mentioned, or god forbid I make a mistake on a stat, maybe it's time not to read these updates. And give your head a shake. And read my "Uplifting Thought" below:)
UPLIFTING THOUGHT
I've coached these 2 young dudes since they were in Gr 3, and Gr 4 respectively. Both work hard every game & practice, both are great team-mates, and friends to all. Neither has ever thought about a stat, whined about number of shots, or headlines. They just word hard, listen & focus, & compete. There are no short-cuts. Neither will receive all the accolades that 3-4 guards (that take most of the shots) in this league get - but BOTH are the 1st two taken in any draft, or chosen by any High School coach. Their one flaw, they are too selfless. Just wanted to say what a pleasure it's been watching these two grow into fine young men. Thanks again Tyler Felt and Justin Hinrichson. Listen, focus & learn, get a little bit better everyday, work hard & compete, and be a good team-mate. Be like Justin & Ty.
KEY STAT OF THE DAY - Adam Henkel, who coaches THREE teams went 6-0 yesterday !!!
Our last Sunday league games will be NEXT Sunday, and playoffs begin immediately. On Monday (DEC 7) with ROOKIE "combined practices" and JV "combined practices" before the 1st VARSITY semi-final (not the Bulldogs). ALL semi-final games will be played at St Margaret's NORTH GYM. The winners of each semi-final will play on SUNDAY - SOUTH GYM, full court. ROOKIE FINAL 9:15, JV FINAL 11:15, VARSITY FINAL 1:15.
We request ALL teams, all player attend their Divisional finals to play or cheer on, and there will be awards presented after final games.

WEEK 7 in the books, and to be honest - anyone can win any game. In ROOKIE, the last place Dragons went 2-0 with decisive wins over the Blazers and the Lazers, with a team oriented attack led by Jeremy, Gavin H and Sebastian. The Blazers and Tropics were both 1-1, while the Lazers were 0-2. High scorers were Mav 27, Gav G 26 and Jeremy with 20. Not sure anyone has more fun playing than Jeremy - he brings energy, a never ending smile and in many cases also provides a play by play account of what's happening. Fun to watch. A few of the Gr 7-8's should take this hint.
In JR VARSITY, the Bombers (led by Brody again) extended their winning streak to 6, with wins over Bucks and Dub Shots. The Big Ballers also went 2-0 with Nathan leading way with 35 pts (2 games) - in a solid team team effort. VARSITY remains a heads-scratcher as Flight lost a narrow 66-64 battle to the Bulldogs with league leading scorers Toren (Bulldogs-28) and J (Flight-25) putting on a show. But then Flight defeated previously red hot (I guess for a game) Breakers 58-48. Breakers had just thumped league leader Ballerz 75-52, only to have the Ballerz come back & defeat the Bulldogs 65-54 behind Diem's 31 pts. If any of that made sense, please let me know. Well done all.
UPLIFTING MOMENTS
I don't see all the games. Yesterday I watched some of the ROOKIE games and took part in some VARSITY games. Two performances stand-out. The 1st was Jeremy's (ROOKIE-Dragons) above as noted. Just a breathe of fresh air. The 2nd was Diem's (VARSITY - Ballerz) performance vs Bulldogs. A quick back-story. This week we had to inform the Linder bros (Bulldogs) they could not play for 2 weeks because of new COVID restrictions. In order to be competitive, the Bulldogs added Tyler (from Ballerz) and Olin (from Breakers). So when the Ballerz played the Bulldogs, not only did they not have their star 6' center (Tyler), but he was playing against them. Who would check Tyler...? That's right 5'5" Diem - 5'5" might be a stretch:). But that's not all. Diem excelled in all 3 key areas - offense, defense and leadership. He effectively shut down Tyler (had more rebounds as well), he helped Jarrah defend Toren (who only had 14 pts), & in his spare time Diem scored 31 pts with red-hot shooting. And most impressively did this while playing a team game, being positive to ALL his team-mates. We need to see more of this. Well done Jeremy & Diem.

The topsy turvy world of youth hoops is alive & well. THREE 1st place teams went 0-2 (one in each division - Blazers, Dub Shots and Bulldogs). Two others strengthened their leads (Tropics & Ballerz). One growing trend is that the teams with balanced scoring (ie playing better together) are now defeating the teams with 1-2 elite scorers. Makes sense. In ROOKIE BALL, the high-scoring Blazers got lit up by the Lazers 69-48, while the Tropics won a thriller 60-59 vs Blazers. Might've also has something to do with who played & didn't play. In JV - per last week's game notes, if Kingston & Brody are playing, the Bombers are a tough match-up. Lots of size, and good guard play from Tano. In VARSITY, the Ballerz are the cream of the crop with a 66-62 win over the former red hot Bulldogs. Balanced scoring from BNE14 players Jarrah, Diem, Ty, Chris overcame Toren's 32 pts. Ballerz also crushed Flight 83-56, with the same balanced scoring. Flight pulled off an upset of the Breakers 54-53, with J leading all scorers with 25. In another resounding "balanced" win the Breakers DESTROYED the Bulldogs 70-50, with nearly FIVE players in double figures. Well done all.

Some upsets, some lopsided score and some nail-biters, and one heart-breaking loss. In ROOKIE BALL, we had an upset and a heart-breaking loss. The 7-3 Blazers were down by 2 and with the game on the line, Gr 2 (& League Leading scorer) Mav hit a FT to tie the game, & send it into OT. The heart-breaking part was the game was decided by an own bucket (scoring on your hoop). I've seen high school kids do it. The Tropics on the other hand, are hot - going 2-0 with even team scoring. In JV, the Bucks won a 49-48 nail-biter to the Dubshots. The Bombers also went 2-0 to no one's surprise. When they have both Kingston & Brody in line-up, they are tough to beat. In VARSITY, the hottest team in Division are the Bulldogs led by Toren, Frank and the defensive wizardry of Little Joe. They went 2-0 defeating the Breakers, and Flight. J.Helman (Flight) & Toren continue to lead the lead in scoring, while Justin (Breakers) continues to rebound like a madman. In another awesome game the Breakers defeated the 1st place Ballerz 61-58 behind Gr 7 snipers Noah (21 pts) and Blake (16), with Chris Wong replying with game high 25. Well done all.

Below are Score Sheets for Sunday's games
What's interesting about today's game is how close teams are competitively. In ROOKIE Ball, while the Blazers may be 7-1, both wins today were within 10. In JV, it's a toss-up - anyone can beat anyone on any given day & same for VARSITY. As noted Blazers went 2-0, and were led by a brand new leading scorer of the day (for ROOKIE League) - West. West had a day high 31 pts vs Tropics. In JV, the scores were low (maybe defense was good). Aaron with 20 and Brody (with 21). 2 game total. In VARSITY, where there are three's raining down everywhere - Jay had a day high of 40 vs Breakers, and Diem had 31 vs Breakers. Other high scorers were Toren with 28 (vs Flight) & 26 (vs Ballers), and Frank 21 (vs Flight). Olin had a break-out 24 pts vs Flight. Well done all.

Below are Score Sheets for Sunday's games
We now have no undefeated teams in our FreshCoast League. The Tropics upset the mighty Blazers 54-46, holding league leading scorer Mav to 4 pts. Another highlight was Jarrah's (Ballerz) 37 pts vs Flight, which ties him & J (Flight) for highest pt total in a game. Overall most games were competitive - with the exception (as always) when a key player is missing.

Below are the score sheets for the games
Some of the most exciting games in FRESHCOAST history today. A Rookie League Double OT, and a Varsity THREE point buzzer beater. Lots of close games, few lopsided - but that's due to a few missing players so all good. Overall the roster changes has made all THREE divisions more competitive.
Even though I didn't see it, the Rookie League game between the Blazers (4-0) and Lazers (1-3) was a double OT classic, with a put back for the win. I did see the Flight (2-2) and Breakers (1-3) thriller, with the Breakers up all game. The Breakers were up 49-47 with 20 seconds left and HAD the ball, but after a miss Flight (J.) had an at the buzzer shot with Justin in his face, and like Kawhi with the Raptors - bounced a few times on rim & went in AT THE BUZZER. Pandemonium ensued!!! Fun fact J. had 37, Will had 13 - Flight had 50 pts:)
