GRADE 11 (ENG3U)

Week 1:

Khayr in shaa Allah in the upcoming school year. Students are asked to acquire the Imprints 11 Volumes 1 &2 textbooks and a separate English binder. We will be starting with review from grade 10.

Week 2:

Students are asked to acquire the reading material from the library, home or bookstore for silent reading. We will begin by analyzing Narrative Writing and reading a few examples of this text type from Imprints . A Literary Devices quiz has been scheduled at the end of this week.

Week 3:

This week we are continuing our discussion of narrative writing and students will be handing in their own narrative story based on events that shaped their summer. We will begin to explore Personal Responses and will learn how to give insightful comments on a verbal narrative.

Week 4:

This week we are finishing up our Personal Responses to Malcom London's TED Talk video on High School, and beginning to dive into Descriptive Writing. We will be reading Edgar Allen Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum".

Week 5:

This week we will be continuing to read Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Pit and the Pendulum', and students will be working on their own descriptive writing assignment. Students will be having a test on the short story next week and should also prepare to bring Frankenstein by the end of the following week.

Week 6:

This week we will be continuing our discussing of descriptive writing and doing some review for the Pit and Pendulum Test on Thursday. Students will be handing their Descriptive Writing Assignment.

Week 7:

This week we officially begin our second unit on novel studies. We will be reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. We have begun to look at the authors biography, genre of writing, and analyzed the preface and letters found at the start of the novel. Students will receive a handout outlining some important contextual questions based on letters 1-4. This handout is for homework, and students should spend the weekend studying for the quiz on Monday.

Week 8:

This week we will be reading chapters 1-5 of Frankenstein. There will be related chapter questions for homework along with in class discussion and activities.

Week 9:

This week we are continuing to read chapters 7-10, study the literary terms relevant for our story so far, and learn the necessary vocabulary.

Week 10:

This week we are continuing to read chapters 11-14, and understanding how foreshadowing relates to the story so far.

Week 11:

This week we will be reading chapters 15-17 of Frankenstein. We will be discussing Point of View and how it applies to these chapters specifically. Students will be starting an essay on the topic of the monster in the novel due on Monday.

Week 12:

This week we are continuing chapters 18-20 of Frankenstein. We will be working on an essay on the Point of View discussed in the novel and how the perspective of the narrative has shifted.

Week 13:

This week we will be reading chapters 20-23 of Frankenstein. We will be analyzing the historical issues and themes present in the novel.

  • 1-2 page reflection on article as it connects to Frankenstein

Week 14:

This week we will be finishing up Frankenstein. There will be class debates on the various themes related to the story. Students will also be writing an in-class essay on one of the themes in the novel.

Week 15:

This week we will be starting the Frankenstein Group Debates. This will take place during the week and students will be given their topics and time to prepare. Next week will be the Frankenstein Unit Test.

Week 16:

This week we will be finishing up the Frankenstein Debates. We will also be reviewing the plot structure and themes from the novel in order to prep for the test.

Week 19:

This week we will begin reading Shakespeare's Macbeth. Students will have Act questions to work on for homework.

Week 20:

This week we are continuing to read Macbeth. Students will also be given their Summative Tasks to work on independently. Students will have a Character Collage Assignment due on Thursday.
