Research and development of nanomaterial for dispensing printing technology that can be used for MEMS gas sensors

I am developing and training a multimodal model for the synthesis of nanomaterial ink based on metal oxide semiconductors for printing electronics on MEMS and used for gas sensors to detect different toxic gases. I developed methods for sensor array ink materials and new dispersing printing techniques and their optimisation along with parameters for integration into metal oxide-based micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) sensors. Inkjet-printed MEMS sensors are popular due to their lightweight, fast fabrication, and low-cost gas sensors for environmental monitoring and industrial applications. Additionally, I leverage crowdsourced data from the GuessWhat dataset to gain deeper insights, further strengthening the model's robustness and reliability.

Research on a combination approach using two functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic.

The aim of this dissertation was to develop modified Fe3O4@SiO2 (SMNPs) nanomaterials for the separation and enrichment of heavy metals, especially inorganic arsenic and chromium species, from the drinking and environmental water samples. As a typical SPE methodology, the MSPE process has high mass transfer efficiency and strong selective ability and can realize highly sensitive detection of trace elemental forms. MSPE methodology has simple operation and low price, and it is very suitable for analysis. We developed new mono-/multifunctional silica-coated nanoparticles as MSPE materials/adsorbents suitable for elemental speciation analysis to develop the MSPE ICP MS hyphenated technique. We summarised the work of the dissertation into the following aspects:

Preparation of novel bifunctionalized magnetic nanoparticles for sequential speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic.

The novel bifunctional magnetic nanomaterial SMNPs --(NH2 +SH) was prepared facilely and utilised efficiently as an MSPE matrix for speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic. As(V) and As(III) can be captured at the same time by the sole adsorbent through electrostatic and coordination interactions, respectively, towards amin o and mercapto groups in a wide pH range. The stability of labile inorganic species was preserved during the adsorption step because no oxidation or reduction operation was pre-executed. This is the first attempt to synthesise a multifunctionalized magnetic nanomaterial for non-aggressive speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic. The simultaneous adsorption on a single adsorbent and stepwise desorption endowed the bifunctionalized magnetic nanomaterial with the outstanding ability to be used for separating other native elemental species by MSPE.

3-(2-Aminoethylamino) propyltriethoxysilane and carboxyethylsilanetriol sodium salt were grafted on silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles via sol-gel process to prepare novel amine- and carboxyl-bifunctionalized magnetic nanocomposites (SMNPs-(NH2 + COOH)). After well characterized, this doubly functionalized material was used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent to separate and enrich inorganic chromium species followed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry detection. The optimization of MSPE operation parameters including pH was conducted. It is reasonably elucidated that the adsorption mechanisms of zwitterionic SMNPs-(NH2 + COOH) towards chromium species are electrostatic and/or coordination interactions. Cr(VI) and Cr(III) can be adsorbed around pH 3.0 and around 10.0 respectively with strong anti-interference ability not only from other co-existing ions but also from the two labile species each other, and eluted by dilute nitric acid solution. With a 15-fold enrichment factor, the limits of detection of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) were 0.008 and 0.009 μg L−1, respectively, profiting from the maximum adsorption capacities of 7.52 and 6.11 mg g−1. The just one magnetic extraction matrix based speciation scheme possesses excellent convenience and friendliness to Cr(VI) and Cr(III) without any oxidation or reduction prior to capture of these two species. This protocol has been successfully applied to the speciation analysis of inorganic chromium in real-world environmental water samples.
