OSCE Station : Blood Pressure Measurement
Focus of Station: Student's ability to accurately measure blood pressure with appropriate technique and equipment.
Key Features/Summary of the Case: Accurately measurement of blood pressure of a simulated patient. The student must explain, take consent and demonstrate proper technique and communication skills throughout the process.
Scenario of the Case: A 40 year-old- male who came in OPD with complaint of headache. He is known hypertensive
Scheme of the Marks:
· Greet the standardized patient with his introduction while enters the room. (01 mark)
· Briefly explain the procedure to patient, ensure comfort and takes consent. (01 mark)
· Prepare the equipment, sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. (01mark)
· Position the patient appropriately; ensuring arm at heart level while seated comfortably. (01 mark)
· Palpate the radial pulse and inflate the cuff until the pulse disappears, then further inflate by 20-30 mmHg. (02 marks)
· Place the stethoscope 2-3 cm over the brachial artery and slowly deflate the cuff while listening for the Korotkoff sounds. (02 marks)
· Record the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings accurately. (01 mark)
· Thank the patient and ensure they are comfortable before leaving the room.(01 mark)
Guidance for the Examiners:
Observe the student's technique closely, ensuring proper adherence to the procedure. Also assess student's communication skills and ability to interact effectively with the patient.
Instructions for the Students: A 40 year-old- male who came in OPD with complaint of headache. He is known hypertensive. Please measure his blood pressure (Total marks 10 and time is 07 minutes).
