In my Storybook, I am going to create a fantasy mash-up between two widely known characters: Dorothy from the Land of Oz and Alice from Alice in Wonderland. I arrived at this idea of a mash-up by thinking about something that is uncommon to write about. I assumed that many people have not combined these two popular stories into one. Both of these stories have been my favorite since I was a kid. To provide some background, I will give short descriptions of both of these stories and how I am planning to combine them in my storybook.
To begin, I will start with The Land of Oz. I will be basing my movie primarily around the Oz books. In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy lived on a farm in Kansas before a large tornado came through and picked her and her house off of the ground. Dorothy and her dog, Toto, were thrown from the sky and ended up in Oz. In Oz, she met many friends, including the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow. All of them lacked one characteristic: the Lion lacked courage, the Tin Man lacked a heart, and the Scarecrow lacked a brain. Dorothy wanted to go home, back to Kansas, so they made the journey to the only man who could help all of them: the Wizard.
The second fantasy novel I will focus on is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This is a classic story of Alice, a young girl, who spots a white rabbit and follows him into a rabbit hole. She runs into a tiny door but cannot pass through until she drinks a potion to make her shrink. After several different adventures, she ends up stumbling upon the Tea Party with the Mad Hatter. After many mishaps, Alice ends up fleeing Wonderland and making herself wake up from the dream.
Both of these stories are classic fantasy novels that many of us are familiar with. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was a novel written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a book written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. I am going to retell the original story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with four different mini stories all building on top of the other, while also incorporating Alice into Dorothy's journey to get back to Kansas. I hope to bring together these two unique characters in order to merge the two popular stories.
