Frequently Asked Questions about the Fairview Bands Program
Q. Is Marching Band required to participate in Concert Band?
A. As with all BVSD high schools, all students enrolled in band participate in the Marching Band unless a student plays a Fairview sport that conflicts with band, or the high school does not have a Marching Band. The musicianship, ensemble work, community building, and discipline translate to the high level of performance in the Concert and Jazz Bands.
Q. I've heard that Marching Band takes a lot of time. As a Freshman, how can one balance the extra rehearsals and schoolwork?
A. The Marching Band season lasts from August through October with only two evening rehearsal days; Mondays and Wednesdays. Students have time between the end of the school day and the beginning of rehearsal to have a bite to eat and do school work. Most band students gather in the band hallway during this time with upperclassmen helping underclassmen with school work as needed. During the marching season, some Saturdays are filled with competitions or pre-competition rehearsal as well.
Band students earn great grades, even during the marching season, with about 90% of them having a 3.5 GPA or higher. On average, band students take 4 weighted (Pre-IB, AP, IB, etc.) classes each semester.
