2026 FAIRGROUND PARK MASTER PLAN
2026 FAIRGROUND PARK MASTER PLAN
Fairground Park originally included a wide range of features such as a racetrack, grandstands, lakes, and ornamental landscaping. Over time, the park evolved to reflect the recreational needs of the surrounding community, incorporating more active-use spaces such as athletic fields, walking paths, and playgrounds.
By the early 20th century, as public demand for recreational green space grew, the City of St. Louis acquired the fairgrounds in 1908 and officially opened Fairground Park to the public. The park was developed during a period when cities were investing in large urban parks as part of the broader City Beautiful movement, intended to provide natural beauty and improve the quality of life for urban residents.
Today, Fairground Park spans over 130 acres and includes historic architectural elements such as the Bear Pit, the Music Pagoda, and remnants of the original fairgrounds. It continues to serve as a public green space for the community and stands as a testament to the recreational and social history of the city.
The guiding principles of the Fairground Park Master Plan use the park’s history and current conditions and function to understand what is important to the use, character, health, and management of Fairground Park.
