School Profile
SLU's Basic Education School or known as Laboratory High School located in C.M Recto St. Navy Base 2600 Baguio City, Philippines. Is the place where I spent 1 month observing, assisting, and also teaching. I taught in the Senior High section of the SLU Laboratory school although there are also the elementary school section in General Luna road and also Junior Highschool section just right across the road of the Senior Highschool section. SLU Senior High Laboratory School has a vision and mission of "committed to be a transformative socially engaged Catholic Educational Institution forming Christ centered, responsible and globally enterprising citizens through holistic human and Christian formation, collaborative learning, and academic excellence in the pursuit of justice, peace, and integrity of creation".
Academic Support System
SLU Navy Base Laboratory High School has so many facilities and activities for the students to be a part of. The school has 3 laboratories namely the biology lab, chemistry lab, and physics lab plus one laboratory for the lab technician. All of the laboratories above were highly maintained and overall provides all the needs of the students to perform set experiments.
From my personal observations the chemistry lab is provided with many types of apparatus that is complete so the teacher can plan many types of experiments to aid the learning process of the students. The school also have a library that is full of different books for the student to choose complete with the study corner and a computer room so that the students have many options to learn independently. The school field is used for many activities such as morning rites and sports. For the classrooms, each one of them has triple slideable whiteboards and a smart tv in front of the class.
Another thing is that this school has many clubs for the students such as science and social club which every once in a while would hold a competition for the students. SLU Navy Base Laboratory School has so many teaching staff that were all great on their field and each with their own signature way of teaching.
Teaching System
From my personal observation, SLU Navy Base Laboratory High School use classic teacher centered lesson combined with high tech use in the classroom. Most of the time the teacher will explain and describe the lesson in front of the class first while also using numerous technology to explain the materials such as powerpoint presentation, video presentation, Mini quizz, Learning Management System named "Genyo" and also using a group base learning system especially when performing experiments in the Laboratory.
Others
Other things worth mentioning are the cafetaria that has numerous food stalls for the student to choose that are serving good balanced meal with a reasonable price. Then the school also has a photocopy and printing shop that is also double as stationery shop so that every student necessities are provided well enough, therefore students don't have to go outside of the school vicinity. Then there is also a medical center inside the school building that is good enough for any emergency regarding student's health.
Teaching Methods
The teacher that I observed and also is my CT (Coordinating Teacher) is Ma'am Marietta Abuan. She teaches the grade 11 of SLU Navy Base Lab School and she handles 7 classes in total. She mostly use teacher based lesson and most of the times divide her students into groups especially for chemistry experiments session. She always encourage her students to be critical and quick when solving a problem. She is the type of teacher that is strict yet funny so each lesson by her is not boring and the students follow the lesson relatively well. She always provide a powerpoint presentation to aid her lesson and always use problem solving assignment as the assessment for the students.
Learning Materials and Innovations
The learning materials used is a mix of classic classroom materials such as slideable whiteboard with marker, Smart Tv for presentation of instructional video and powerpoint, textbooks, calculators, tablet and laptop. In every single lesson each students should bring their own stuffs and not to borrow each other's for example the periodic table and calculator or else they would get their score deducted.
Sources of Learning and Technology used
Their Learning Materials are composed of sources from students books, Internet, and Personalized materials by the teacher. The teacher would make a powerpoint presentation a day before the lesson and planned an assignment for the students to practice in the classroom. The assignments are mostly problem solving questions with a level of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) implemented. The technology that is regularly used is smart tv and laptop to support the learning process of the students. they mostly uses it for the learning management system where every lesson and assignment would be uploaded there. The LMS is named "Genyo".
Authentic Assessment
The teacher mostly do "assessment as learning" and "assessment for learning" in a form of assignments after each explanation of the materials and also occasionally in the end of the week she would have a quizz as the "assessment of learning". In every assignment she would implement HOTS model and especially in the quizz with a strict rule to make sure that no student would cheat and their result could be accepted.
Curriculum
The Philippines have an obligation of 12 years study period which is 6 years elementary school, 4 years junior highschool, and 2 years of senior highschool. Compulsory core subjects in both Elementary and Secondary schools include languages, Mathematics, Sciences, ICT, Physical Education and the Arts. However, in Grades 7 and 8, Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) subjects are also introduced. Therefore the chemistry subject is taught since secondary school or junior highschool until senior highschool and it is combined as one as "sciences" which also includes biology, and physics.
Chemistry Teaching Plan
Chemistry is especially interesting because it's a combination of numerization and memorization skills in one lesson. Therefore I planned a lesson plan that is rather interesting and not boring by combining my presentation with real life context and also virtual lab simulation to encourage students to learn about chemistry.
I prepared two lesson plans, one for laboratory experiments and another for regular class lecture. The lab experiments was "Types of chemical reactions" and the other one was " The mole concept".
Teaching Procedures
Orientation : Teacher with the class president lead the prayer and check for students attendance
Presentation : Teacher presenting powerpoint and explaining with the whiteboard to deliver the core concept of the material
Application (lecture)/ Culminating activities (labwork) : Teacher would ask the students to apply the set concept to solve a problem given by the teacher in the classroom or laboratory
Evaluation and Generalization : Teacher ask the student to cite what they have learned or obtained from the previous activities and review the lesson
Time Management and Organizing Activities
Each session of lecture will either have one hour or two hours of time. for regular lesson is one hour and for labwork it is two hours.
Activity 1 would take around 5 minutes before the main activity.
Activity 2 would take roughly 25 minutes for a clear and comprehensible presentation including answering questions if there are any.
Activity 3 would take 20 minutes for regular lecture and would take 80 minutes for labwork. during this time the teacher would occasionally answer question regarding about procedure or concept by the students.
Activity 4 would take 10 minutes for the students to fully express their understanding of the lesson and review the lesson
Classroom Management
From my experience all of my students were highly interested and full of curious questions that is sometime being asked to me, They hardly ever lose attention and quickly understood my explanation proven by their performance when I gave them assignment to solve whether during the regular lecture or during laboratory experiments. During laboratory experiments, I always walk around to check on their groups, to see if they need assistance or sometimes they just need some reassurance about the procedures. Though during lab experiments I have to be a little bit loud when giving instruction so that everyone could hear me all throughout the Lab room.
Problem Solving While in School
At one time there were a shortened period and I have to observe the time that I spend on each section or steps during my lesson so that we don't run out of time before all the learning objectives are achieved. During that time I have to improvised my way of delivering lessons by only mentioning the point of materials and all the important stuff because I wasn't informed that during that day was a shortened period.
Purposes of Practicum
My objectives for SEA-Teacher Program was improving my confidence, improving my communication skills, improving my teaching and class management skills, experience life abroad and adapting to it, expand my network with people abroad and gain an International relations. All those objectives above are all achieved and met from the one month stay in Baguio City, Philippines.
Procedures of Practicum
The preparation for my teaching practicum was divided into 3 steps, firstly observation, then assisting, then teaching demo. I spent my first 2 weeks observing while also assisting Ma'am Marietta Abuan in her classrooms. Then finally teaching demo on the last 2 weeks in Baguio City. I consulted my lesson plan with my buddy and also my CT before actually entering the classroom so that everything is in the correct order.
Outcomes of Practicum
From this teaching practicum I actually have a better confidence and better communication skills especially using english, and then I also got a better idea of how a good class management is from observing, assisting, and teaching. Another bonus is that I got new friends and networks internationally with my Filipino friends and Vietnamese friends
The Challenges of Practicum
I found it difficult to adapt to the food and the walking culture in the Philippines. I felt like all Filipino food are either too salty or too sour for my taste. Then the walking culture is so much more engrained in the Filipino society that I actually felt weak when walking from and to the school compared to my Filipino buddies. Though overtime my body could adapt and my taste preference has accepted all the different Filipino dishes
Overall Impression
To me, the Philippines is a great country to work with for Indonesians. Everything is somehow similar but also different, either from the food, language, or culture but I greatly enjoyed all these differences because they're very unique to me. The STELA (School of Teacher and Liberal Arts) is also greatly helpful for us especially the buddies because all of them always look after us and help us to adapt in the Philippines. Overall, Saint Louis University is a great host university for providing everything that we needed from the begining until our return to Indonesia. Much thanks also for Ma'am Marietta Abuan for being a great example for me to follow and for sharing all her knowledge about teaching to me.
Suggestions for Future Improvement
I hope that SEAMEO would hold a new program other than SEA-Teacher that we could participate into and I hope that SEAMEO expands its host Nations for the set event. SEA-Teacher was a wonderful experience for me and I am really grateful for being a part of it.
