How Might You
Empower Faculty to Help Adult Learners Online?
Empower Faculty to Help Adult Learners Online?
Out of 17 million enrolled undergraduate students, one in five is at least 30 years old. One in four is caring for a child. And 47% go to school, at some point, part time. This is simply a profound demographic shift.*
Adult learners want to be respected and heard, and often don't have time to wait for issues to be passed down the line to be solved by a second-, third- or fourth-party responder. If we can help our peers build their own efficacy and troubleshoot/solve basic issues, it will help strengthen the bond between students and instructors.
Plus, there is literally zero downside to having staff grow and improve their digital literacy!
YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT:
IS TO CREATE A DIGITAL RESOURCE TO HELP COLLEGE FACULTY LEARN THE BASICS OF THEIR LMS.
LMS = Learning Management System
The clock is ticking. Let's get to work!
Create a resource to help faculty grow their andragogy around digital learning.
Things you can create, but are not limited to, include:
A website
Infographics
Slideshows
Videos
Podcasts
Documents
Interpretive Dance
Other Cool Things
As you explore and create your resource, think about answering the following questions:
1. Do all adult learners have equitable access to digital resources and technology?
2. Are there common areas of our LMS where adult learners are getting stuck?
3. Is it worth our faculty's time to be active in the LMS/digital troubleshooting sphere?
4. Should we require faculty to have some agency and responsibility for helping students with basic digital questions?
5. Is my resource accessible, easy-to-use, yet comprehensive?
There's no time to waste! REMEMBER:
It's not enough to simply say that faculty can help students; you need to emphasize why it's important for faculty to be able to provide a basic level of digital help for our learners.
Submit your work on Brightspace in TWO places: the assignment section and in the discussion section. Please comment on a few of your classmates' resources, too!
