One of the best ways for families to speak up is sending individual emails to our Board members.
FACTS / TALKING POINTS
Student:Counselor ratios at LBUSD are:
843:1 Elementary School Counselor
799:1 K-8 School Counselor
760:1 Middle School Counselor
434:1 High School Counselor
Counselors duties are mainly administrative and not school supportive counseling duties
The primary issue impacting student learning is mental health, and not learning loss or accelerated learning needs
Counselors are the first responders to students’ mental health concerns, but are overburdened with administrative duties
Counselors' ratios are preventing them from supporting students and families, which are desperately needed post-Covid
The lack of school counselors is unnecessarily putting students’ lives at risk
LCAP funds should be used to support additional school counselors and a school district top priority
Suicide rates and self-harm are at an all-time high
Lack of support has resulted in students' behavior impacting teachers' ability to teach
Putting SEL responsibilities on teachers and placing social workers on campuses are not suitable replacements for the need for additional counselors
