National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) has been rolling out various initiatives to facilitate internet and mobile application use for its services. STeADY allows brokers to deliver contract notes electronically while DAN is an online depository for account validation. With IDeAS, clients can get the updated balances of their Demat accounts. The SPEED-e electronic facility is featured as another such NSDL service for Demat account holders. If you have a Demat account with a depository participant of NSDL, you can use the SPEED-e mobile application.

Through SPEED-e, retail investors in the stock market may not only access Demat holdings but also carry out activities like confirming e-DIS and e-voting. They can avail the SPEED-e facility if their DP (Depository Participants) has registered with NSDL SPEED-e registration. How to access it? Use the SPEED-e login! You can find that out directly from your DP with your NSDL ID or log on to eservices.nsdl.com to find out the list of DPs registered to offer NSDL SPEED-e services. Besides, the mobile number of the sole holder or first/second/third holder must be registered with the Demat account for e NSDL related notifications.

The DP authorises the registration request online and will notify you through e-mail. Clearing Member(s) will authorise the request for the addition of a pre-notified account through SPEED-e. If the CM has not subscribed to the SPEED-e facility, you will have to submit a consent letter in a prescribed format from CM to your DP. Once the DP authorises, you can access the NSDL SPEED-e facility. You can submit delivery instructions once CM authorises the addition of a pre-notified account.

Password-based access is provided based on the credentials you know, viz., your user ID and password. Both the user ID and the password are alphanumeric; the user ID can be three to eight digits, while the password must be eight to sixteen digits.

E-token access is provided based on what you have and know, i.e., the e-token and the PIN, respectively. In e-token use, the DSC authenticates that the person possessing the e-token and the PIN is gaining access. Unlike password-based access, e-token users can enjoy additional benefits of SPEED-e. NSDL SPEED-e is an innovative electronic service provided by the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) to facilitate the efficient and secure handling of Demat account transactions. Essentially, NSDL SPEED-e acts as a digital platform that enables Demat account holders to submit delivery instructions electronically, eliminating the need for physical submissions to their depository participants (DPs).

This initiative by NSDL is a clear reflection of the ongoing shift towards digitisation in the financial sector, ensuring that transactions are not only quicker but also more transparent and user-friendly. Through NSDL SPEED-e, the process of managing securities becomes streamlined, offering investors an enhanced experience with minimised operational hassles.

The SPEED-e process refers to the electronic method introduced by NSDL for Demat account holders to submit their delivery instructions online, rather than using traditional physical DIS (Delivery Instruction Slips). Initially, users need to register for the SPEED-e service, choosing either password-based or e-token-based access. Upon successful registration, users can access the platform by logging in through the SPEED-e portal.

Here, they can submit instructions related to the transfer of securities, pledge securities, and even manage mutual fund transactions. The platform provides real-time updates, ensuring that users are always informed about the status of their instructions. All submissions through SPEED-e are encrypted and secure, emphasising data protection.

SPEED-e is a common Internet Infrastructure that enables the Depository Participants (DPs) to provide depository services to their clients. Demat account holders (including Clearing Members) subscribing to this facility can submit delivery instructions to their DPs through SPEED-e website  , instead of submitting delivery instruction slips (in paper form) to their DPs. The users of SPEED-e can also check latest balances and transactions in their demat accounts through a facility called Internet-based Demat Account Statement (IDeAS) and monitor the status of execution of instructions.

If you wish to avail of this facility, you have the option of password based or smart card based access to SPEED-e. For password based access, you should fill up an online registration form by choosing your own 'User-Id' and 'Password' and then submit the duly filled-in registration form in person to your DP and sign an agreement with the DP. The DP will authorise your request and thereafter you can start using SPEED-e with the User-Id and password.

For smart card based access, you should fill up the 'SPEED-e Application form' available on the SPEED-e website or can be obtained from your DP and then submit the duly filled-in form to your DP. After you sign an agreement with the DP, your DP will register you as a smart card user by assigning a User-Id and help you procure a Smart Card Kit, Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and Personal Identification Number (PIN). Install the Smart Card Kit on to the computer and with the User-Id, DSC and PIN, you can start using SPEED-e.

In password based operation, the access is given on the basis of "What you know (User-Id & Password)". The User-Id should be 'Alphanumeric' with minimum of three and aximum eight characters. The password also has to be 'Alphanumeric' with a minimum of eight and maximum of sixteen characters.

In smart card based operation, the access is given on the basis of "What you have" (smart card) and "What you know" (the PIN). The smart card based operation affixes digital signature to the transactions which is non-repudiable and authenticates that only the person possessing the smart card and knowing the PIN has submitted the instruction. 152ee80cbc
