Meeting the needs of the displaced families on their own terms by creating sustainable systems that will allow families to re-establish themselves and become independent.
All levels of support are appreciated and will have deep reaching, long-term impacts.
You've gotten to know them, read their stories, seen their faces- and you can help them!
Humanitarian aide has luckily met the initial emergency needs of the families with hundreds of organizations providing food, clothing, sanitation products, etc.
But this kind of support is not sustainable and short term- now families need ways to support themselves and become independent.
Just about every subject of this series named a sustainable source of income as their biggest need- their first step in rebuilding their lives.
To meet that need, Little Star (Astghik) Charitable Fund is creating sustainable income projects to give these families a jump start.
Little Star Charitable Fund is a nonprofit organization operating in Armenia. It implements community development programs in various underdeveloped but promising village communities in Lori Province. Their goals are to sustainably create new jobs and implement social programs aimed at reducing poverty in the community through agriculture and entrepreneurship.
Astghik Charitable Fund has recently opened a small handmade clothing production brand called "Made in Kurtan" which is 100% employee owned and operated by women. Kurtan is just one of the hundreds of under resourced villages across Armenia. The initiative focuses on teaching women the skills to create garments and other fabric based goods, to run an organization or business, and become financially independent. Astghik Fund aids in selling the products and returns all of the profits to the women themselves (with the exception of the funds set aside for maintenance.)
This piece is centered on low-income and under-resourced Armenians in Lori Province and is now hoping to expand to involve displaced families and families of fallen and injured soldiers in the war.
To help Made in Kurtan expand, we are raising funds to purchase a loom and spinning wheel that will allow them to employ more people, expand their line of products, and increase their independence. We are also hoping to open more centers and expand to more villages.
$6,000 will cover the costs of purchasing 2 spinning wheels and 1 semi-mechanical loom. $30,000 will allow us to begin the expansion to serve more people!
PS: Stay on the lookout for Made in Kurtan products coming to the US soon!
