Wahat al Salam/ Neve Shalom, which in English reads Oasis of peace, is a village in the eastern part of Israel close to the West Bank border. The town is unique in the sense that Palestinians and Jews live together, in a bi-lingual, bi-cultural environment fostering peace, understanding, partnership, justice, equality and conflict resolution.
There are about 80 families currently in the town: half are of Palestinian background and half are of Jew background. Around 300 families are waiting for admission but the current Israeli government, unsurprisingly, is blocking their entrance. On the other hand, Israeli settlers and Palestinian extremists are doing all they can to make the experience fail.
The village runs education programs for locals dwellers and for the residents of nearby villages, until the recent past both from Israel and the West Bank.
Their feature programs include the School for peace, The Youth Center, the bi-national, bi-lingual Primary school and kindergarten. In addition, they run an art gallery and occasional music festivals. For details on their activities see here wasns.org
