Welcome! I am a Chilean researcher and academic with a keen interest in energy economics and finance, prosumerism, community and local energy, nuclear power and biform games applications.
I commenced my career in the financial industry in Chile, working in that sector from 2007 to 2015, after a failed attempt to undertake clarinet studies in the Department of Music at Universidad de Chile. I then served as a Financial Auditor at Ernst & Young before moving on to take the post of Head of Risk Management at Consorcio, an insurance company. During this period, I enhanced my expertise by pursuing a master’s degree in energy engineering, specialising in nuclear energy, in 2014 and 2015.
In 2016, I entirely shifted my focus to academia, embarking on a PhD research project exploring the application of game theory to community energy emergence in both Scotland and Chile. My work was recognised in 2017 when I was awarded the National Doctoral Fellowship (Beca Doctorado Nacional) by ANID (formerly CONICYT). This award allowed me to earn a double PhD degree in engineering from both Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and The University of Edinburgh.
I continued my academic journey as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The University of Edinburgh from mid-2019 to late March 2022. Here, I was part of the Heat and the City Research Group in the Department of Sociology. My role involved synthesising, extending and mapping empirical evidence about the UK’s local energy system businesses and finance, and sharing insights broadly.
Once I went back to Chile, I commenced another Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in August 2022. My work focused on applying concepts from real options theory, capital budgeting and stochastic processes to energy systems financing. I quit this post in late November 2022.
I am currently an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH).
Here is a summary of my academic qualifications:
PhD in Engineering, The University of Edinburgh
Doctorate in Engineering Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Master in Energy Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (magna cum laude), Universidad Alberto Hurtado
I also earned a degree in Accounting and Auditing and hold certificates (diplomas) in Corporate Finance and Sustainable Energy.
Once I finished my PhD, I had the privilege of studying the clarinet under the guidance of the renowned British-American clarinettist Jean Johnson in Scotland from early 2020 to late 2021. I am again undertaking clarinet studies under the supervision of renowned Chilean clarinettist Jorge Rodríguez Cerda at Escuela Moderna de Música in Santiago, Chile.
