My name is Bri Brown, and I will be your online instructor for ENGL 120/020: College Composition and Reading. I am so excited to learn, read, write, and share with you this semester! My class is meant to be a collaborative learning environment in which students and instructor work as a team to create the most rewarding literary experience. Talking with students is my favorite part of the class.

I will respond to Canvas Inbox messages as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours. If you do not hear from me within 24 hours, please email me again. I NEVER IGNORE STUDENT EMAILS. Because I obsessively check emails, I do ask in return that when you do email me, please be respectful and professional.

Each week, I will send out 1-2 announcements to introduce you to the weekly content and activities and offer mid-week reminders.
You will receive assignment feedback from me in Canvas in the form of the rubric, in-line textual annotations, and an audio/text summary comment.
Your discussions will be graded within 72 hours of the deadline, and larger projects will be graded within 10 days of the deadline.
I will foster an atmosphere of respect, trust, and collaboration.
The Q&A forum in our class is a great place for general course-related questions. Your peers might even answer you there! If your question is personal in nature, please send it directly to me through the Canvas inbox.

The main purpose of teaching, for me, is to promote equity. This comes in various forms: I choose to facilitate topics that foster transformative justice and anti-racism; I aim to hear as many student voices as possible by fostering a safe and welcoming learning environment, both online and in the traditional classroom; and I purposefully design my courses to promote spacious thinking and empathy for those who may differ from us. Above all, equity truly drives my pedagogy both in the content that I choose to cover and the policies that I implement. It is my hope that students feel validated, empowered, included, and celebrated in my courses through the content, policies, feedback, and accessibility I strive to provide. I do hope you enjoy our course together, and I very much look forward to getting to know each of you as scholars and as individuals.
This is a 16-week, fully online course that begins on August 21, 2023.
This class does not meet in Zoom. Your learning will be conducted asynchronously (which means "not live") in Canvas.
There is no required textbook. All of your required readings will be included in our course modules in Canvas.
You will learn in a community with your peers. This is not a self-paced course. You will interact with your peers throughout each of our weekly modules.
This class is organized into one-week modules that open each Saturday morning.
There are 16 modules in the course that each correspond to one week in the term. The modules are broken down like this:
