THE EVOLUTION OF SPACE FOOD

Let's start from the beginning to now!
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who, aboard the first successful crewed spaceflight, became the first human to journey into outer space. Traveling on Vostok 1, Gagarin completed one orbit of Earth on 12 April 1961, with his flight taking 108 minutes.
During the flight Gagarin also became the first man to eat food in space, consuming three 160g tubes of food — two containing beef and liver paste, one containing chocolate sauce. Up until Gagarin's flight, it was widely believed that eating in low gravity would be impossible.
In the 1960s, NASA contracted with Pillsbury to develop a high-energy snack for American astronauts. The food would need to fit through the small, airtight opening in the astronauts' helmets. A team at Pillsbury developed a rod-shaped energy bar.
After the space travel and the moon landing "space food" was on sale for everyone. Soon many companies branded their foods as "space food" food that is eaten in space.
Buzz Aldrin (the second man on the moon) had very positive things to say about one of his mission’s appetizers: shrimp cocktail. He later explained, “They were chosen one by one to make sure they would be tiny enough to squeeze out of the food packet, and they were delicious!”
By the 1970s and ‘80s, culinary options on spacecraft grew to include more than 70 food items. For the first time, shuttles such as Skylab designated large interior spaces to use as dining rooms.

HOW ABOUT NOW?
NASA is even experimenting with space gardening, so one day astronauts might be able to feed themselves without any earthly help.
