The placekicker for the Devil Bats and one of the original three members of the team, along with Yoichi and Ryokan. He is often mistaken for an older person, since he initially has a bit of stubble and has a buzz-cut. When he finally joins the team, he grows out his hair and shaves. He leaves the team during the spring season of his freshman year, due to the fact that his father had become seriously ill. As a result, he was forced to drop out of school and take over as the construction foreman of Deimon High. Though he desperately wanted to get back into playing, he refused to rejoin the Devil Bats. However, after meeting with Sena and Monta and seeing how determined they are to get him back on the team, he agrees, but only if they become a strong team. In the manga, he makes his comeback during the game against Seibu, when his father hit him for abandoning his team. In the anime, he does not rejoin the team until the game with the Bando Spiders. He has a one-sided rivalry with the kicker of the Spiders, Kotaro Sasaki, a fellow kicker.

The main character of Eyeshield 21. Initially a bullied gofer, his speed was discovered by Yoichi as he was literally forced into joining the football team at Deimon. However, he soon grows to love the game he plays as he masters both the Speed of Light Pace and further techniques as he gains the confidence to become a successful player. At different times throughout the anime and the manga, he will often, through emotions, tap into the Speed of Light Pace, but the problem with this is, every time he does that, he will often overextend himself, causing himself to faint. As time went on, he got to the point where he can run the Speed of Light Pace at will. Sena became the new captain of the Deimon Devil Bats in his 2nd year at Deimon Private Senior High School.

Futoshi is a chubby person who keeps his eyes shut all the time; he's very lazy, to the point where even opening his own eyes feels tiring. The only thing that isn't too troublesome for him is eating. In the manga, he was dragged onto the field by Yoichi in the match against Amino Cyborgs as a support player, though he claims he can only play for 30 minutes max. He's also a part of the Sumo Club. Futoshi is also seen in episode 56 of the anime and chapter 114 of the manga helping the Ha-Ha Brothers with line practice for the match against the Kyoshin Poseidon and is then seen throughout the episode. Recently, he has assisted Ryokan on the defensive line in the game against the Ojo White Knights, using a tactic similar to the Taiyo Sphinx to hold back the defensive line against players like Makoto Otawara.

In the anime, Yoichi blackmails him by threatening to reveal that he used to wet his bed until he was in junior high. He hasn't done much for the team but sticks with it longer than most of the other "support" players. This is mostly due to the fact that he gets better recognition from girls as a member of the Devil Bats, rather than as a basketball player, (as shown in the anime).

This piglet, being too far away from home, stayed at Deimon. Cerberus would have made Pig-Berus into tonkatsu, but Pig-Berus saved himself by pointing out that he would make a much better meal when fully grown. However this also puts him into a rather direct line of fire, as the moment he's fully grown, he will probably be consumed. Pig-Berus is now a mascot and cheerleads alongside Cerberus.

Attending the Deimon High School, his school uniform is composed by black pants, white shirt and a turquoise jacket (according to the anime coloring).

During the series he shows two version of the football uniform. The first one is red in top and white in pants, the second one is red and white in top (being red the shoulders and chest sides, and white the front and back) and white pants.

He has little respect for authority and has in fact usurped authority over Deimon High School well before the series begins and has the authority over the principal, using his power in the school to give himself beyond-perfect scores in all his classes and divert funds to the American football club as he desires. Besides blackmail, Yoichi can often intimidate others into taking the action he wants by waving around his vast arsenal of firearms. Even without having to take direct action, Yoichi's mere reputation is enough sometimes to make most of the student body fear him and bow to his authority. He has a brutal appeal to violence and firearms, making him hotheaded such as firing his gun so many time to intimidate people. His devious attitude and how he often goes great length to get his way such as find information on his opponent he does often leave other completely bewilder such as taking a part-time job to gather information on Kyoshin Poseidon and then sent Sena to spy on Kyoshin Poseidon as part of job and making look like it a coincidence and not spying.

It's true, the world of sports anime does tend to be mostly male-dominated. This is largely because until recently, the subject was mostly treated as a subgenre of the "shounen tournament" stable of manga and anime aimed at boys. Sports series featuring attractive boys making bedroom eyes at each other, obviously with girls in mind, are a relatively new phenomenon. I first remember noticing this in the early 2000s with shows like Dear Boys (AKA Hoop Dreams) and I'll/CKBC. Around the same era, we had Prince of Tennis, which was a fujoshi staple for many years. The intent was to bring female readers into the world of Shonen Jump and other boy-oriented manga magazines, by keeping the stories relatable to boys but simply making them all hot. It worked. Really really well. Of course now we have Free!, Big Windup!, and several you mentioned.

There has never been a true absence of girls' sports anime, however, as one of the most formative anime series ever made was, in fact, a college girls' volleyball series. Attack No. 1 started as a manga series in 1968 and as an anime in 1969, running 104 episodes, and to this day it's remembered in Japan as a classic. I don't think the series has ever been properly subtitled (maybe a fansubber once tackled an episode or two years ago), but it was made into a TV drama in 2005, and that has been fansubbed, if nothing else.

A few years later, legendary director Osamu Dezaki, hot off the success of his boxing anime Ashita no Joe, tackled the high school girls' tennis world in Aim for the Ace! Though it only initially ran 26 episodes, the adaptation of Sumika Yamamoto's super-melodramatic manga was a gigantic hit, and further established Dezaki as one of the top directors in anime. Dezaki later went on to direct Rose of Versailles, Space Adventure Cobra and many others; Aim for the Ace! gets dusted off for a new adaptation every decade or so.

Here is a list of every sports anime series I could find that had a female protagonist. Be aware that not all of them are really meant for girls -- some take a more sexual approach to their characters (especially when wrestling is involved). Also, some of these are quite old, and a handful have never been subtitled.

Habashira Rui ( ?) Habashira is the captain of the Zokugaku Chameleons, a team consisting of various gang members, of which Habashira is the gang leader. Though originally portrayed as a stereotypical delinquent prone to act violently when angered, Habashira is later portrayed sympathetically when he is revealed to care deeply about the game of American football and to not be a simple brute. He is the only player on his team who is truly motivated to win, and in his first year on the team he had to force his team to practice hard through threats and violence, because he could not gain their respect otherwise. Rather than holding a grudge against the Devil Bats after losing to them early in the series, he only wishes to face them in a game in the future, and even gives Sena a ride on his motorcycle during the Fall Tournament so he can help the Devil Bats win. In the anime, when Kanagushi has several students disguise themselves as Eyeshield 21 and sabotage the Chameleons, Habashira prevents his teammates from taking revenge on Eyeshield 21 and then on Kanagushi when he is exposed, so that the team will not be suspended from the tournament.

Habashira plays linebacker for the Chameleons and is considered talented for the position. He claims to be a greater linebacker than Shin, but Sena's ability to easily defeat him when the Devil Bats play the Chameleons indicates this is not the case. He is one of the three linebackers named best of position after the Autumn Tokyo Tournament. As captain, Habashira directs his players to adapt to each team they play, targeting the weaknesses of each team. He is depicted playing in two games throughout the series, once against the Devil Bats when he is defeated by Sena, and once against the Kyoshin Poseidon in the Autumn Tokyo Tournament. Against the Poseidon he is the only player on his team to play his hardest throughout the game whereas his teammates resign themselves to defeat midway through. Although Habashira is a second-year player, Zokuto's school policy, like Deimon's, prevents students from participating in clubs after their second year, so Habashira's dreams of playing in the Christmas Bowl end with this defeat. Although having natural talent to some extent, a lot of his skill and scare tactics are derived from his extremely long arms, which, when extended to his sides, seem almost impossible to get past. 0852c4b9a8
