A1 is Extreme's most advanced level, and is in charge of choreographing dances for themselves, and all other levels! To join A1, you must be placed on this level at auditions, which occur in the beginning of the fall and spring semester. At auditions, we ask all dancers if they are willing to choreograph. If you answer yes to this question, and meet the requirements of the level, you may be placed on A1! The requirements can vary from semester to semester, depending upon the experience of dancers auditioning; however, one steady requirement to be placed on A1 is the ability to complete 8 consecutive a la seconde turns. Beyond this, our A1 will consist of the top scoring dancers who wish to choreograph. If you do not get selected to be on A1, do not be discouraged! It can be competitive depending on who is auditioning in a semester, and we hope that you will try again in the next audition cycle.
If you are placed on A1, you will receive an email to join the mandatory A1 meeting on the day following makeup auditions. This is where you will learn more about the level, and you will get to share your choreographic interests for the semester. Following this meeting, you will be assigned to what dances you will be teaching for the semester! All dances are choreographed and taught by at least two A1 members, so you will not be alone! Also, all new A1 members will be paired with a veteran member in their choreographic duos for their first semester on A1.
Because being an A1 member is a leadership position with importance for the company as a whole, there are a few things all A1 dancers are responsible for. A1 choreographic duos are in charge of meeting up to create choreography, that they will then teach during Extreme practices. In addition, A1 members will take attendance at the beginning of practice for the dance they are teaching. Choreographers also are in charge of keeping formations and cuts of music updated to serve as a reference for all dancers (these can be found under quick links on the home page). Closer to the showcase date, A1 choreographers are responsible for deciding the stage lighting for their dances, and will work with the costume chairs to determine costumes for their dancers. We also ask that choreographers sign up to lead stretch at the beginning of Tuesday practices! Do not let these responsibilities scare you, we are a team and are always there to help you!
If you have any questions regarding anything A1, feel free to ask any of your choreographers, or send an email to extremedancepresident@gmail.com and/or extremedancevp@gmail.com 💖
