Is augmented reality a real thing or something from Sci-Fi movies or some fiction based novel or film? Before i embarked on this project, i thought Augmented Reality was some restricted technology used by NASA but had an idea it was also used in some high technology games as seen in movies.
Augmented reality (AR) is the real time use of information in the form of text, graphics, audion and other virtual enhsncements blended with real world items. Using software, applications and hardware such as AR glasses, augmented reality overlays digital content onto real life environments and objects (sap.com).Augmented reality works by superimposing digital information onto real-world objects to create 3D experience that allows users to interact with both digital and physical worlds.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, we are in a contactless era. The metaverse is providing interactive technology with a high sense of reality in the virtual world Yu, J. (2022). Snap Chat, GPS, Pokemon Go are all examples of AR used by todays' students on social media, to travel and for entertainment. During the andemic, virtual reality sports classrooms were used for physical education classes. Sports games or a biology labusing augmented reality to screen yoga or disect a rat can be used for a class instruction. The life logging method records and managrs physiological changes in the body using a smart watch and the mirror world will show several class participants on one screen.
The advantages of augmented reality , life logging and virtual reality are that they can be used even in a small space, knowledge and ideas can be shared quickly between instructors and learners and the cost can be low. This emerging technology can promote equity among students as well as convenience. The down side is this technology can be expensive, needs internet connectivity, and needs high ethics among students to not abuse it as well as respecting privacy laws.
Augmented reality should be in schools as it encourages profiency based learning. Educational leaders need to embrace the metaverse to keep todays' student engaged.
