Safety Information

This information is repeated in the booklet. Additional information may appear here as it becomes available.

Optical and Laser Safety Statements

The laser diodes used in the original kit have a maximum power output of less than 5mW. Students should be told to not point the laser towards anyone (including themselves) and the lasers should NEVER be pointed near anyone’s eye. If everyone in the room is able, it is good practice to have the laser at or on the table and do not allow anyone to sit while working with a laser. This will decrease the chance of accidental exposure. If any student is not able to stand, if they are in a chair that is high enough that their head is well above the table, the same effect will be had.

Electrical Safety Statement

When working with electronics or other electrical devices the risk of shock is always a possibility. To reduce the risk of shock ALWAYS disconnect power (the batteries) to a circuit before changing the circuit in anyway or contacting any physical part of the circuit. Any loose clothing or long hair that might come in contact with the circuitry should be contained to reduce the risk of contact with the electrical circuit. The electrical supply to the circuit in the original kit is 3 “AA” style batteries. The maximum applied voltage is less than 5Vdc. This poses a minimal risk of any electric shock. It is still good practice to always respect the components as though a hazard was present. Be careful and exercise caution.

Component Cleaning Guidelines

Earpiece - The clear part of the earpiece can be unscrewed from the earphone and wiped with an alcohol wipe if desired.

Solar cell - It is best to avoid touching the solar cell. If necessary, it can be wiped with an alcohol wipe.

Glass container - Rinse with water and use a small amount of dish soap if needed, wipe dry. The containers are dishwasher safe so they can be run through a household dishwasher if needed.

Plexiglass rod- Wipe the rod with a damp towel. Avoid using alcohol or detergents on the rod.
