Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's third wife (1940-45), was a partial inspiration for Lauren Groff's story, "Delicate Edible Birds." As a war correspondent for more than 60 years, she covered virtually every major conflict of the 20th century during her career. After the Spanish Civil War she reported on the Japanese invasion of China, the Czech Crisis, the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland, and all significant theaters of World War II (including the liberation of Dachau).
