Losar, meaning "new year" in Tibetan, is one of the most important festivals in Sikkim. Celebrated primarily by the Tibetan community, Losar marks the beginning of the Tibetan calendar. The festival usually falls in February or March and lasts for around 15 days. Sikkim tour packages often include visits to local homes and monasteries during this time, allowing you to experience the joy and excitement firsthand.
During Losar, homes are cleaned and decorated with colourful flags and flowers, symbolising the removal of negative energies. Traditional dishes such as guthuk, a type of noodle soup, are prepared, and offerings are made to deities. The highlight of the festival is the Cham dance, performed by monks in vibrant costumes and masks, symbolising the victory of good over evil.
