About Sagar
Sagar (formerly known as saugor) is a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India, and is situated around a lake that is surrounded on three sides by low spurs of the Vindhya range which makes it one of the most beautiful places in the world. Sagar is 1,758 feet above sea-level.
Dr. Hari Singh Gour University (also known as Sagar university) is one of the main reasons why Sagar is very well known across the country. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the university in the year 1946 and it is said that he came up with the phrase ‘Switzerland of Madhya Pradesh’. Sagar is also famous for its rich cultural, artistic and political contributions towards society. This land of ‘Mahakavi Padmakar’ has given quiet talented poets, writers, actors and many more artists to the country.
Sagar has given many important political leaders as ministers to the state and national cabinet as well. The first chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Honourable Shri Ravishankar Shukla was also from Sagar. In recent years Sagar has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission and listed as top safest city of India 2018.
Sagar is fairly easy to reach from all parts of India, owing to its geographic location. It can be found right at the center on the map of India and is very close to Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

Sagar is 160 Kms from Jabalpur, 181 Kms from Bhopal, 208 Kms from Jhansi, 375 Kms from Indore through Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) and some private travel services. You can easily get a bus to Sagar from various other cities of Madhya Pradesh and bordering states.
By Rail
It has its own Railway Station named as Sagar Railway Station which is connected to the major cities of Madhya Pradesh. It is well connected to the cities such as Delhi, Gwalior, Agra, Mathura, Jammu, Amritsar, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Goa and Hyderabad.
