In order to be considered for membership of National Junior Honor Society, students must first meet the 3.80 Cumulative GPA requirement for Explorer Middle School as an 8th grade student. We have amazing students on this campus; this high GPA requirement allows for those outstanding students to be considered. The NJHS requests the list of students whose GPA was 3.80 or above at the end of their seventh grade year. The advisor makes no selections on their own and presents each student with the opportunity to complete an application (unless the students has encountered disciplinary action* in the quarter in which applications are presented).
Students receive an email with the application letter and are required to complete the digital application in a timely manner (usually one full week**). Missing the application deadline can be a reason for non-selection as it is a reflection of student's level of responsibility (Handbook 47).
*Disciplinary Action is determined by the assistant principal.
**Extensions will be granted for medical and family emergencies only.
Once students have completed the digital application, the Faculty reviews the students' leadership experience, service experience, and character (through the essay response).
Students that have been selected for membership will receive an email and physical copy inviting the new candidate to review the expectations and sign acknowledgement. Parents will also be asked to sign this acknowledgement of expectations.
If a student has not been selected by the faculty, a notice will be sent via email. Students who do not return an application will not be considered for membership.
Parents and families are invited to attend the induction ceremony in the fall to celebrate the newest members of NJHS. The ceremony will be in the cafeteria and will be followed by refreshments and snacks. Attending the ceremony is not mandatory but highly encouraged as it is a memory for all and a huge milestone for our EMS eighth graders who have worked hard to get to this moment. The date of the ceremony will be posted on the NJHS calendar.
