Propulsion
Propulsion is the system that moves an aircraft forward through the air. Without propulsion, an aircraft cannot generate enough airflow over its wings to produce lift, meaning flight would not be possible.
Thrust is the forward force created by an aircraft’s engines. It pushes the aircraft through the air, overcoming drag and allowing it to accelerate, climb, and maintain speed.
The stronger the thrust, the more energy the aircraft has to move and climb.
Jet engines are the most common propulsion system used in modern commercial aviation. They work by drawing in air, compressing it, mixing it with fuel, and igniting it. The high-speed exhaust gases produced are pushed out the back of the engine, creating thrust.
Jet engines are efficient at high speeds and high altitudes, which is why they are used in most passenger aircraft.
Turbofan engines are a type of jet engine used on almost all modern airliners. They have a large fan at the front that moves a significant amount of air around the engine core.
This design improves fuel efficiency, reduces noise, and increases thrust, making them ideal for long-distance commercial flights.
Turboprop engines combine a jet engine core with a propeller. Instead of relying mainly on jet exhaust for thrust, most of the power is used to turn a propeller.
These engines are more efficient at lower speeds and are commonly used on regional and short-haul aircraft.
Turbojet engines are an earlier form of jet propulsion. They produce thrust mainly from high-speed exhaust gases without a large bypass fan.
They are faster but less fuel-efficient and noisier compared to turbofans, so they are mostly used in older aircraft and some military jets.
Propulsion determines how fast an aircraft can fly, how far it can travel, and how efficiently it uses fuel. It directly affects aircraft design, range, and performance.
Without propulsion, lift cannot be maintained, making it one of the most essential systems in aviation.
