I've had exploding kittens for a while but haven't really played it because every time I try to play, nobody really knows whether they are supposed to keep what they draw secret or show it to everybody to prove it isn't an exploding kitten.

Are you supposed to show everybody what you draw when you draw it (allowing more complicated strategies based on remembering what cards people have) or do you just trust that nobody hides an exploding kitten?

So yes, you trust people to admit when they have a kitten. Cheating is possible (i.e. hold a kitten, then steal a defuse and pretend the next card was a kitten), but apart from that specific case it won't stop them being found out by the end of the game.

You know exactly how many exploding kittens are in the deck and there are no cards that allow you to put cards from your hand back in the deck, so it would become obvious at some point if someone cheated (either someone else drew an exploding kitten from their hand or the end of the deck was hit and there was more than one player left). Thus, I believe keeping cards secret is the way to go.

Adding to other comments regarding cheating, I think it would be practical to draw, look at the card, and then if it isn't a kitten, add it to your hand. That way, no one can sneak kittens out of their hand and into the game to defuse it, since the drawn card is clearly separate from your hand.

As you may remember from last month, we are part of the summer Bloggers Board Game Club with Asmodee and had so much fun with our Who Did It? Game Review last month. This month we're playing Exploding Kittens and it is another hilarious and fun game to play as a family.

Exploding Kittens is a game that comes in a small box and without any small pieces, so it's perfect for travel and taking with you out and about. It is aimed at children from age 7 and up and can be played by 2 to 5 players at a time. Inside the box you will just find the instructions and the cards, no small parts to lose (which is another huge plus for us!)

I had a quick read of the instructions and realised that it could be a bit complicated to start with, especially for Ivy who is only 5 (but of course wanted to play!) so we simplified by playing with open hands so that everyone could see each others cards and I could help them both. As we progress I am sure that we'll be able to play properly.

You start by sorting out the cards and removing the exploding kittens and defuse cards to distribute them properly.

Then you hand out 7 shuffled cards to each player and 1 defuse card each (the exploding kittens go back in the deck, 1 less than the number of players). The aim of the game is to not to get an exploding kitten, but if you happen to have a defuse card you can use it and then not explode and lose the game at least once.

Each player then takes turns either playing a card (or combination of cards) or passing and then picking up a card from the middle (hoping it's not an exploding kitten).

There are several different types of cards which all work in different ways. There are cats that can be used to get a card from another player (your choice), and favours which work similarly but it's the card holders choice. There are also cards to skip a turn, to attack another player into taking two turns, to shuffle the deck and to cancel another players card.

The children liked the 'see the future' cards as when this card is played they can then have a little peek at the top three cards in the pile. This is one of the ways that Ethan started to think about strategy, as when he peeked he saw that the third card was a spare defuse card, so he skipped the rest of his turn to avoid picking up, so that he would get it on his next turn. (It is also great for avoiding exploding kittens!)

If you do get an exploding kitten and have a defuse card, you then play it and place the exploding kitten back into the deck. This can also be done strategically if you want to place it on the top for the next player or similar, or randomly in the deck.

However if you don't have a defuse card you are then out of the game. I can see how this is another game that will be brought out again and again and how the children will become more and more strategic about how they play. It's definitely a keeper!

You'll have a deck of cards containing some Exploding Kittens. You play the game by putting the dec face down and taking turns drawing cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten.

When that happens, that person explodes. They are now dead and out of the game.

This process continues until there's only 1 player left, who wins the game.

 BASICALLY

 IF YOU EXPLODE, YOU LOSE.

AND YOU ARE FULL OF INCENDIARY LOSE SADSAUCE.

IF YOU DON'T EXPLODE, YOU LOSE.

AND YOU ARE FULL OF GREATNESS. GOOD JOB, BUDDY

AND ALL OF THE OTHER CARDS

WILL LESSEN YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING EXPLODED BY EXPLODING KITTENS

 FOR EXAMPLE

You culd use a See the Future card to peek at the top few cards in the Draw Pile. If that reveals an Exploding Kitten you could then use a Skip card to end your turn and avoid drawing it

1. Remove all the Exploding Kittens (4) and Defuse cards (6) from the deck.

 2. Shuffle the remaining deck and deal 4 cards face down to each player.

 3. Deal 1 Defuse card to each player so that everyone has a hand of 5 cards total. Keep your hand secret.

 DEFUSE CARDS

These are the only cards that can save you from Exploding Kittens. If you play a Defuse card afer drawing an eploding Kitten, instead of getting exploded, you get to reinsert the Kitten back into the Draw Pile anywhere you'd like. Try to get as many Defuse cards as possible.

 4. Insert enough Exploding Kittens back into the deck so that there is 1 fewer than the number of people playing. Remove any extra Exploding Kittens from the game.

 FOR EXAMPLE

For a 4 player game, insert 3 Kittens.

For a 3 player game, insert 2 Kittens.

This ensures that everyone eventually explodes except 1 person.

 5. Insert the extra Defuse cards back in the deck.

 TWO PLAYER VARIANT

Put only 2 of the extra Defuse cards back in the deck. Remove the other 2 from the game.

 6. Shuffle the deck, and put it face down in the middle of the table. This is your draw pile.

(be sure to leave some space for a discard pile as well.)

 7. Pick a player to go first. (Some sample criteria: most impressive beard, most intimidating odor, shortest spleen, etc.)

Some cards don't have any instructions on them. These cards must be collected and played as Pairs.

If you play matching Pairs with no instructions on them, pick another player and steal a random card from their hand.

 2. After you follow the instructions on a card or play a Pair, you can play more cards. You can play as many cards as you'd like.

 3. Finally, end your turn by drawing a card from the Draw Pile into your hand and hoping it's not an Exploding Kitten. (This is different from most other games in that you END YOUR TURN by drawing a card.)

Play contines clockwise around the table. 152ee80cbc
