Privacy Policy for ExpenseCatch
Last updated: August 9, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how ExpenseCatch ("the app", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects your information.
Summary
ExpenseCatch is a personal expense-tracking app. By default, all your data stays on your device. You can optionally sign in with Google to back up your expense data to the cloud. We do not sell your data, show ads, or share your information with advertisers.
Information We Collect
1. Data stored only on your device (always, no account required)
Expense and income transactions you add manually
Categories, notes, budgets, and app settings
Khata (lend/borrow) ledger entries and contact names/phone numbers you add for that feature
This information is stored locally on your device using an on-device database and is never transmitted anywhere unless you choose to sign in (see below).
2. Payment notification data (optional, Android only)
If you grant "Notification access" permission, the app reads notifications from supported UPI payment apps (e.g., Google Pay, PhonePe) solely to automatically detect the amount and merchant name of a payment and log it as a transaction. This processing happens entirely on your device. We do not read, store, or transmit the content of notifications from any other app, and this permission can be revoked at any time in your device settings.
3. Account information (only if you sign in)
If you choose to sign in with Google from the Settings page, we collect:
Your name, email address, and profile photo (provided by Google Sign-In)
The expense/income transactions currently on your device, which are then backed up to our cloud database (Firebase/Google Cloud Firestore) under your account
If you previously signed in on another device (or reinstalled the app), signing in again downloads that account's backed-up transactions so your history is restored — this happens automatically as part of signing in.
This is entirely optional. If you don't sign in, none of your transaction or Khata data ever leaves your device.
4. App usage statistics and device identifiers
Every time the app is opened, we record an app-open event, and when it's closed we record how long that session lasted, so we can understand overall usage of the app.
Before you sign in, this is recorded against an anonymous, randomly-generated device identifier (created using Firebase's anonymous authentication). This identifier is not your name, email, or any other personal detail — it's a random ID tied only to this app installation. It is used solely to record app-open and app-close events (and how long each session lasted); it is never used to record or associate any transaction or Khata data. This identifier resets to a new one if you uninstall and reinstall the app.
If you sign in with Google, this same identifier is carried over and linked to your account, so your usage history continues under your account rather than starting over. From that point on, app-open/close events are recorded against your account, alongside your profile information.
We do not collect other device identifiers such as IMEI, MAC address, or advertising ID.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above only to:
Provide and maintain the app's core functionality (expense tracking, budgets, Khata ledger)
Back up and sync your data across devices when you're signed in
Detect and log UPI payments automatically (if you enable this feature)
Understand aggregate app usage to improve the app
Provide customer support if you contact us
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent your information to any third party.
Data Storage and Security
Data synced to the cloud is stored using Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication) and is protected by security rules that restrict access to your own account only.
As the app developer, we may access cloud-stored account data (e.g., via an internal administrative tool) solely for the purposes of debugging, providing support, or maintaining the app.
We do not use any third-party advertising or analytics SDKs beyond Firebase's own authentication and database services.
Data Sharing
We do not share, sell, or rent your personal information to third parties. Your data may be processed by our infrastructure provider (Google Firebase/Google Cloud) solely to provide the app's cloud backup functionality, under Google's own data processing terms.
Your Choices and Rights
Local-only use: You can use the app fully without ever signing in. Your transactions, categories, budgets, and Khata data never leave your device unless you sign in — the only thing that does is anonymous app-open/close activity tied to a random per-install identifier (see "App usage statistics" above), which is never linked to your identity unless you later sign in.
Notification access: This permission is optional and can be revoked at any time from your device's app settings.
Deleting your data: You can delete individual transactions within the app at any time. To request deletion of your cloud-stored account data (transactions, profile, and open-history), email us at the address below and we will remove it.
Signing out: Signing out stops future data from syncing to the cloud, but does not delete data already backed up — use the deletion request above for that.
Uninstalling the app removes all data stored locally on your device, and disconnects the anonymous identifier described above — reinstalling creates a new, unrelated one.
Children's Privacy
ExpenseCatch is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted at this same URL with an updated "Last updated" date.
