I don't think I've ever heard the word "crisis" as much as I did these past two years. It's caused us all to freak out. Even if you're as even keel as a lazy cat napping in the sun, you probably still had a moment of anxiousness as crazy stories and mandates flooded your newsfeed.
The negative connotation that comes with the word "crisis" stems from fear, danger, and difficulty. Another way to define the word is when an important decision needs to be made because of significant changes. There, lies hope. Hope is what ignited the idea for the show, Existential Changes.
Existential: grounded in existence or the experience of existence.
People have always wondered why we exist, why we're here. Many of us have come up with answers. Some of us don't have a clue. I'm here, and so are you. Breathing and dreaming, crying and laughing. It's all some big wonderful, terrifying mystery, the realization of our own humanity.
Change: to make radically different.
The one constant we have is change. The world constantly turns. Always, like the wind and seasons. Yet we struggle with this constant, ever-changing existence. This causes us to adjust our course, twisting and turning, dodging and chasing, to get to our destination.
Pandemic or no pandemic, life is full of changes and existential crises. It's inevitable, I suppose, the way we struggle and find new ways to be human. If we allow them, changes can put us into panic mode. But if we step back and look at the change from a different perspective, we may find that things will be okay, and maybe even a little better.
I hope these quirky short plays bring you laughter and hope as we plunge forward, into the hilarity, tragedy, and beauty of life.
Yours,
Amanda Rockhold
