Confirm the procedure to the client
Ask the client to confirm they consent to the screening.
Switch on the machine and place a new mouthpiece on the machine.
Ask the client to take a big deep breath.
Ask the client to blow into the machine. (until the beep)
Record the information on the client's information sheet.
Although extremely rare Diabetes can show a non-negative result.
This is caused when a client is suffering from Hypoglycemia/Hyperglycaemia. (Low/High blood sugar)
If a client is diabetic and produces a non-negative result:
Ensure the client has food and/or takes insulin. For high blood sugar ensure the client drinks plenty of clear fluids.
Check the client's ketone levels using urinalysis.
Retest the client after the client has had time to digest and absorb food.
If a client refuses to consent or provide a sample
Explain to the client that a requirement of their role requires their employer to ensure they are fit for duty.
Explain that you will have to inform their employer that they have refused to provide a sample of breath.
Contact On-Call/Emma and inform the HR Manager of the location so that they can make an informed choice.
If the client produces a non-negative result.
The result needs to be reported to the HR manager as soon as possible for them to make an informed choice.
On-Call and Emma can also offer support and guideance.
