An ECG trace is a visual representation of the electrical signals in the heart during the cardiac cycle
The shapes formed by the trace indicate the direction of electrical current
This is commonly measured using 3 or 12 ‘leads’
Some of these ‘leads’ are measured directly with an electrode, others are inferred
Different leads give information relating to different portions of the heart
Having completed this session you will be able to:
Explain what an ECG trace is measuring
Describe the difference between 3 lead and 12 lead ECGs
Describe lead placement to obtain a 12 lead ECG
