The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 [3]
The aim is to protect employers, employees and the public.
Employer Responsibilities
Avoid moving and handling activities if there is a risk of injury.
Assess moving and handling activities if they cannot be avoided.
Reduce the risk of injury to employees as far as reasonably practicable.
Review risk assessments regularly.

Organisational policies and guidance
Implement and make available organisational policies and guidance.
Specialist roles
Introduce specialist roles to lead and coordinate systems and procedures, for example moving and handling advisors.
Risk assessments
Undertake risk assessments, monitor, complete regular audits, act upon findings and ensure information is shared.
Training and guidance
Provide employees with training and guidance relevant to their role.
Specialist equipment
Provide specialist equipment and training in its use, to support safer moving and handling activities.

Safe systems
Follow prescribed safe systems of work and training.
Policy
Follow your organisation’s moving and handling policy.
Equipment
Use equipment provided, following manufacturer’s guidance and your training. Don’t use it if you don’t know how to.
Safety
Do not misuse or interfere with equipment provided for your safety.
Risk
Don’t put yourself or others at risk with your actions or by NOT doing something you need to do. Report any concerns to your manager.
Check
Check your equipment is safe to use before using it. Report any concerns and follow the advice given by your manager.
